depends on which review you read because some show the 4890 using more power than the 4870.Yeah, your PSU should be more than enough for two HD4890's, they actually take a little less power than the HD4870's.
he said he has a 24inch so 1920x1200 or 1080 is going to be his res. personally I would just get a single 4890 as that would be nearly twice as fast at 1920 than his current 8800gt. then in a few months or so just sell the 4890 and get an even faster DX11 card. The GTX 295 is the faster card overall, but if you like lots of AA at 2560x1600 the 4870X2 is the better bet. Both are now single PCB cards FWIW.

Im still trying to figure out why he has 6gb of ram on a 32bit OS.![]()
I said at 1920 it would be nearly twice as fast and that is true for many games at certain settings. in fact its well more than twice as fast in many games mainly because the 8800gt will usually have just 512mb which isnt enough for high res and settings... it is probably closer to 75-80% faster overall though. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_4890_PCS/12.htmlI dunno if I'd say the 4890 would be twice as fast as his 8800GT...

haha sorry dude my bad dunno wat i done there, this upgrade is for me! my missus dont understand half this shit haha let alone use it to its potential
You have a Phenom setup.
Get an ATi card not an nVIDIA card.
I am assuming your motherboard chipset is 790x or 790fx.
Later down the road you can add more cards to add some performance (CrossfireX). Your board does not support SLI.
Also with CrossfireX you can pair a 4870X2 with a single 4890 1GB.
I doubt he'll see another GPU upgrade on that machine. From the looks of it he's doing one ever 2 years or so. Furthermore with that CPU 2-4870x2s are going to give no tangable benefit at that resolution. You don't need to have a SLI capable motherboard to run a 295, hence the reason for a 295 to exist.
I've stated the few problems I've got against the 4870x2 in my post above. I think he'll be more than happy with a 4870x2, but what you just posted was a bunch of FUD.
Good news for ATi CF users. Lets hope it helps. Since it's version 1.0, that might be why not many have heard of it."ATI CrossFire Xtension v1.0". HardOCP don't seem to know of it's existence and neither do you.
It adds Crossfire support to any game lacking a profile. Easy to use, small and efficient. http://www.geeks3d.com/20090218/ati-crossfire-xtension-v10/
I don't post FUD.

This utility simply automaticly renames the EXE file of a game to crysis for Direct3D Mode or etqw for OpenGL Mode. This could cause rendering errors, but it may be worth a try.

I know you're a fan of nVIDIA but what I posted is realistic. He can get an HD 4870X2 and later on if he wants get another ATi card for even more graphics performance.
He can also get two 4890s.
As for what you posted.. it's a non-issue. I don't "wait" for Crossfire support. There is an app out there called the "ATI CrossFire Xtension v1.0". HardOCP don't seem to know of it's existence and neither do you.
