Well it's that time of year when I like to upgrade to the newer tech that is out.

Currently I have:
P4 3.0C@4ghz
Abit IC7
2x512mb PC2700 HyperX
eVGA 6800GT @440/1.2


Im going to purchase:
Abit AG8 i915 Motherboard
Asus X600XT PCI-E
P4 3.0 LGA 775

Chose that setup because I can use my current RAM with it....and before you say my RAM is only PC2700, trust me this RAM will hit 250Mhz with 2-3-3-7 timings.:) ANd I know the video card is a step down from my 6800GT but it puts me in the right direction for PCI-E.

If you have any other suggestions, list them here.:)

From what I can tell, that system will actually run slower than what you currently have. That really looks like quite the downgrade to me.

As far as "getting in the right direction", I'm not too sure that is what you're accomplishing. None of the components that you are getting are really components that will kickass in a new system down the road. The AG8 doesn't support DDR2, so that wont be able to be used in the future. The Ram is definately aging, regardless of what timings you can run at now. Some modules can easily do 2.5-2-2 @ 250Mhz.

As for the video card, what exactly is the point? I don't see any point in going with a slower card. How is getting a slower card going in the right direction?

Im really want a PCI-E setup and even though the X600XT isnt the best, I can always upgrade later when something better comes out. As for not getting the i925 which supports DDR2....DDR2 doesnt offer much over DDR1 at this moment in time.

But neither does the entire LGA 775 platform right now. I just think you're better off waiting 6-12 months until the benefits of 775, DDR2, and PCIe start to show themselves better. The 915 is a transition chipset, and I don't think it will last very long.

Hmm what about the Abit AS8 with the i865 chipset?

That wouldn't be a bad option when put with something like a Prescott 3.4e, and would cost you about the same as your first option.

That way you could make the move (in say a year or so) to PCIe and DDR2, and only have to buy 1 PCIe video card.

Hmmm I think I will just do that....at least that way I can keep my 6800GT.:D

Ya, I feel terrible. His old system is almost better than the system I'm about to buy and it's the first major upgrade I've had since '99.

The X600XT is a 9600XT just in PCI-E form.......seems somewhat pointless to me. If I were you I'd upgrade the RAM on your current PC instead of buying a slower system....
