I have a Windows 2000 machine from a friend and he forgot his password. How would I get this??? His machine has a floppy drive and I think it is Windows 2000 service pack 1. I tried booting into safe mode and entering "administrator" with no password to try to get in, but that didn't work at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated. There is alot of data on the laptop that we need to get to. Thanks in advance for your time.

You can boot into a linux live disc (I used knoppix std), grab the "SAM" and "system" files, and crack them on a seperate computer, but if it was a secure password, you'll have to brute force it and that can take a while.

If you just need to grab files from the system, I think there's a certain distro that fits on a floppy disc, that can just change the password, however if you have any encrypted files that you need, this method won't work.
