Getting started

Buy a bunch of $30 dollar cases and mess up a lot. :D

Sadly, I never used my own advise and have instead ended up destroying several +$100 cases.
 
You don't need to waste 30 bucks on each case. Go see an army surplus store or just and odds and ends surplus store for super cheap cases. I know the army surplus store here in my town has a crap load of used pc parts, cases and all for dirt cheap.
 
Surplus store in my area sells boots, ammo cans, and BDUs... I'm jealous of yours!
 
i purchased the maximum pc guide to extreme pc mods. this helped a good bit. i also searched around the internet for how to's and ideas, i also watched some of those custom car/bike shows on discovery channel. also i have the benefit of having a father who has been an auto mechanic for 35+years.

the other practical things are these

plan your mod, get ideas, GET COSTS (this was my first mistake), sketch out what you want to do and get ideas on how to do it.

use cheap or old cases, this idea is sound, buy a few crappy used cases and try your best to make then nice, if they turn out good keep them for your own system or sell them.

get used to fabricating, learn how to add leds or swap existing ones for other colors, basic wiring and sauldering(sp), this is vague but learn how to make stuff work, and make it look cool while you are doing it.

learn how to use a dremel well, a jigsaw, and various sanders/buffers. know your tools and know when to use them.

modding is an art, and one that takes time. i recently opened a custom shop in my area, and at first my customs were better than store bought, but still pretty weak and rough, but now that i'm doing more of them its getting better and flashier each time. just like an artist practices drawing, its the same kind of skill, but since i can't draw i mod (and if i need drawing done i go to one of my artist friends)
