getting ready to build a new system

ok im starting to look into parts for a new system im going to build and its going to be entiely from scratch, im a hardcore gamer and i want to build a badass Athlon 64 system, with a nice SLI motherboard and a good 1gb of RAM, and SATA drives, right now im not to worried about the hardrives the case and all that all i need a nice CPU/Motherboard/RAM for a nice gaming system

so right now this is what im looking at


AMD Athlon 64 3500+
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra Video Card, PCI-E,( will add anotherone later for SLI)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS GAMER Limited Edition PCI Sound Card
1GB of RAM ( not sure what kind)
1 IDE Hardrive( n ot sure what kind)
2 SATA Hardrives in RAID0( not sure what kind)
DVD/ROM dirve( dont know)
CASE- ( dont know)

really good gaming LCD?( have no idea)

how does that look? i know the CPU motherboard and the videocard and the soundcard are the best but im really not sure about the hardrives, RAM and the case i dont care about just some cheap ATX case with a side window

im also not sure what kinf of CPU fan i want i will eveuntually watercool cool it but im going to use a HSF to start off and i need it to be pretty quiet for my roomate

if anyone has any input on my system specs or what parts i should get it would be great and i would like to keep this under $3000
 
Although I dont know much about SLI (since I am an ATi fan) seems like a pretty nice system. I see price isn't as much of a problem with the 2x6800U's that are going to be used for SLI later on ;)

As for HDD's I suggest going with WD, I've always liked their products and support (But haven't had to use their support system yet since none of their hard drives crapped out on me yet)

CPU - If you plan to overclock, get a AMD64 3200+ (Winchester, 90nm), you'll get some nice overclocking over the 3500+ whether it be a Newcastle or Winchester. Well the 3500+ winchester would be nice, but for the price now, I think it would be outta your budget. It averages $300 for a retail version of the AMD64 3500+ Winchester, while the AMD64 3200+ Winchester is around $200 for OEM and $225 for retail.

CPU Fan - I've been a fan of stock cooling seems to be quiet. Plus you said you were eventually going to WC, why buy a nice aftermarket fan and then replace with watercooling when stock would do fine until the time comes.

LCD - Depends on what you want to use as a native res. if you are looking for 1280x1024, I would go work the Samsung 710T (Digital LCD) or Samsung 712N (Analog LCD). Not to sure about 19"+ LCDs since I've never considered them because of the price, but I heard mixed reviews from the Dell 20" LCD (2005fp or something like that) Any of those LCDs you shouldn't see any ghosting or after-images. Any quality LCD with a 16ms response time or lower would be great for gaming.

RAM - Whether you plan to overclock or not, with AMD64 machines, IMO, quality brand is much better then generic. Stick with Corsair, Muskin, Kingston, Geil (I hear good think with Patriot ram) I, myself run 2x512 mb Corsair XMS 3200PTC2 (TwinX). Assuming your setup is a 939 socket.

If the system is for gaming, I'd recommend getting one 74Gb Raptor for games and OS and a single 200Gb 7200k drive for storage. I went SATA RAID 0 before and was not impressed. The Raptor I have now is noticeably faster. RAID 0 increases seek times and has other overheads, so if the HDDs are loading small files, the speed increase is negligible. And you halve the mean time to failure.

You haven't mentioned a PSU - don't overlook this component. The PC Power and Cooling 510 SLI is meant to be the dog's bollocks of PSUs. With two Ultras and the rest of your kit, you're going to need it.
 
i want a nice LCD that is no more than $500 and can do 1600x1200 for when im in desktop mode and is good for gaming, im not sure if im going to be able to get something like that for $500 :(

and i do plan to have a SATA raptor drive as my boot drive and a nice IDE/SATA raid array for my storage

also since im just going to start out with 1 videocard and i want to do some nice overclocking im looking at just getting a nice Nforce3 baord for now, i have been reading the overclocking forum and i guess the MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA is good for overclocking?

and i know about the PSU i got a nice 500 watt vantec stealth power supply :D

If you want to do an SLI setup eventually, getting the MSI mobo seems like a waste of money right now. You'll have to buy an SLI motherboard later down the road. It's better, IMHO, to get an SLI board now. However, from what other people have posted on the forum, some people have had mixed results OCing on the A8N board.

I also seriously doubt you'll find a 16X12 LCD for under $500. But i'm still a CRT fan, so i may be wrong.
 
As far as harddrives go I'd get a 74gb raptor for os and program installs.as was mentioned earlier. You could put two of them in raid 0 if you really want but you won't see any increase in normal gaming and other consumer uses. Then I'd get 1 or 2 250 gb harddrives for storage. However, I would not put these in raid 0 as that just doubles your chance for data loss which is especially bad for a drive used specifically for storage. You could run them in raid 1 though (and have only 250 gb between the two) for increased reliability or just install them as separate drives and be done with it.
