Getting new Socket 939 processor, which one?

To make a long story short, my family's computer crapped out and needs a new mobo, processor, ram, and PSU. Right now I have an Atholon 3500+ in my computer I was thinking of giving to them and then I would get a new processor for myself. I don't want a new mobo, I like my asus a8n32sli deluxe board. Is X2 worth it, even if I don' t do too many things at once? How are the FX's?

I would say get a opteron 165, but since the prices went up on all of them last week, get a x2 3800 and overclock it, would be the best value, I stepped up from the 3500 to a dualcore and its great, alt tab is my new bestfriend
 
I just bought a 3800x2 and received in last tuesday. So far I'm sitting at 2.6ghz with 1.4vcore.

Temps tend to be a little high, but I'm going to reseat the heatsink to see if that helps matters at all.

Dunno if the Egg has these in stock, but I did see they have an OEM of the 4400x2 89watt (1mb per core cache). You can tell these from the 110 watt from the model #.

I don't know if I really need or want dual core. The absolute most programs I would be running at one time would be openoffice writer, open office powerpoint (whatever they call it), firefox, limewire, and maybe AIM. When I game, that is all I have running. What do you guys think?
 
@Clementi personally I run single core as that is what my budget would allow,however If I was building the machine today,and the budget would allow it I would go dual core.

Clementi if your budget allows it run with the lowest cost dual core you get your hands on for the socket you run.
 
dual core is way to go, but, if $$$ is limited, grab a 4000+ 1mb oem @ 2.4 ghz and they all go to 3ghz for the most part, mine does (thats 5000+ speed).

All for 79 bucks...cant beat it.

I was looking at the same processor last night. I am in the same boat as you. I have the exact same proc as you and I was wondering if it is even worth it to upgrade to dual core or wait for the quad cores to come out since i would want to get a new mobo anyway for the ddr2 memory. so many options!

FYI Ithink they recommended the 3800 because you can clock it up to 4400 speeds anyway.
 
well if you don't do anything that would really benefit from dual core, a 4000+ might be a good proc to pick up cheap. But, really, if you can spare the extra few bucks, get a cheap dual core and oc it.

I have that motherboard, and I have run that processor in the past. They are fully compatible with each other.

No one recommends the FXs because they are more expensive.
 
I didn't want to switch motherboards either and I had a 3500+ and I got a 4400+ X2 with 1mb L2 caches. Notciable difference.

I got it cranked up to 2.5ghz on stock vcore. Not pushing it any higher till more cooling comes in.
 
Question though...I have read that the 939 is a dead platform. If I'm looking at building a system, how much should I worry about that statement if it's got any truth to it?

It is, there will be no new chips out for it...

S939 chips have a good life span, of about 2-3 years (if they're dual core) with current generation games...

But, in the future we're going to need more than 2 cores, cores that are faster than what AMD currently has.

An X2 (at 2.5ghz) would be a great upgrade for the next year or two.
 
You'll find this funny but one of the reasons why I have a socket 754 3700+ and socket 939 4000+ (both at 2.4 GHz with 1MB L2 cache) is because I like the idea that it's "old technology". lol

Some people claim gaming problems with X2s even though many say they have been able to fix those problems, I wouldn't want to bother. I don't want any possible problems, I don't even want RAM that has errors. So, if I went with a Core 2 Duo, that would mean new RAM as well. That's too expensive for me now so I wouldn't bother.

To the one asking about platforms, well, the socket AM2 may be able to accomodate a quad core but the problem there is it won't work to its full capacity with the upcoming AMD K8L processors. So, you may be better off waiting until next summer unless you still build a machine with socket AM2 and re-use the same DDR2 RAM when the quad cores come out.

I know it's a gamble to wait, but I'd rather gamble that AMD will come out with a superior processor to Intel's Core 2 Duo. I'm excited to see what will come out though. I mean, several months after they come out with the quad cores, we'll have lower prices on them plus lower prices on the next generation ATI cards and maybe even lower timings on 800 MHz RAM. That's probably what it's going to take to run this years video games anyway. Unreal Tournament 3 is going to demand a heck of a lot of processing power.
