Getting new card - 9800 Pro?

Well, a store near my house is having a sale on ATI Built 9800 Pros. They're selling for 192$US. That same store is selling the 9600XTs for 192$US also (these are not on sale). Right now I have a GeForce3 Ti200 and it's dying on WoW. I don't like spending too much money on computer hardware. The new generation cards are completely out of my ethic spending range. So, is this a good alternative?

I'll also be getting a 512mb stick of Crucial pc2700 for 85$ and an Athlon XP 2500.

I would wait on a 6600 for 200 bucks because they outperform the 9800pros I believe.

They do, but does he wanna upgrade to a PCIe board?

Would going from a 9600XT to a 9800Pro be worth it right now? Or should I save and buy a 6800 vanilla?

the 9800 Pro would be better than the 9600XT, but wouldnt last as long (futurewise) as the 6800. I'd hold out a little longer for a 6800 vanilla.

I went from a GF3Ti200 to a 9800Pro and have zero problems playing games. It plays Doom3 just fine once all the tesxtures get loaded up into memory. FarCry with full eye candy brings it to a crawl though.

Its worth the upgrade.

I got it installed. Games are crawling though because my RAM hasn't arrived so they're having to use swap.

Is it much better than my 9800 Pro? I already bought the 9800 Pro. Returning it would be a hassle.

This will give you an idea, as its probablly roughly around 70% faster than the 9800 Pro, but in all means the 9800 Pro is not a slow card for todays games. If you are happy and want to avoid the extra cost and hassle, I wouldn't hesitate to keep it

I play farcry on my 9800pro at stock with all eyecandy at max just fine, farcry is very cpu dependent, with my 3500+ the 9800pro can play farcry all details max fine (not using AA/AF though).

I guess that means the 2500 XP I'm gonna buy will bottleneck the 9800 Pro?

Wait for the release of the 6600 ..that'll drop the price of the 6800's and then you can get one of those. If you're going to make a jump might as well make a big one.
