Getting fed up with the CM Hyper 212+

This HS has been nothing but an irritation. I've reseated it 5 times, used three different thermal compounds (AS5, ceramique and OCZ Freeze) and it still cools worse than the stock HSF. I followed many guides to installing and applying thermal compound to HDTs but it had little effect.

The CPU idles at 40C in a very cool room. I'm using push-pull on the HS. HT is off, vcore is 1.0. My case is a Corsair 700D with 4 120MM fans and 2 140MM. I bumped up the bclck to 150 the other day, making 3.0GHZ. The idle temp shot up to 51C, on a measly overclock.

Am I doing something wrong here or is this just one of the worst HDT coolers? I usually like Coolermaster's stuff, but this is leaving me very unimpressed.

Maybe you got a defective model. I've heard of a couple instances of the heat pipes not being properly filled with fluid on the Hyper 212+. Take it back and exchange for a new one. If it still sucks, return it.
 
Could be a defective model, but also have to consider that the airflow in the 700D is pretty horrendous.
Plus keep in mind that the i7 series run EXTREMELY hot. Idle isn't as important as load, what are the load temperatures?
 
even at 3200mhz, my q9450 idles around low to mid 50's c with a xigmatek s1283, which is only slightly better than a hyper 212+. i doubt the stock heatsink would do better
 
Hmm... interesting...

If one of the heatpipes has not been filled properly, then perhaps it wouldn't be as warm. You could try to test for that.

Could be a bad 212+, but I mean if it's an old i7 920 C0 core, yea those temps dont sound too far off.

Intel's C0 put off ALOT of heat. Even the new D0 cores put off alot of heat, but not compared to the old C0 core.

Besides the fact that idle temps are not very meaningful do you have the temperature controlled fan feature on?

Thus the tilde qualifier. Just did the calculation, it was 150.

No, EIST and speed step crap is off. I only have two fans on motherboard headers, both are set at 100%. Case fans are on a rheobus, the speeds of which seem to have no effect. Starting to regret this case since I'm not doing watercooling. Doing large FFTs in Prime95 right now, seems to be holding at 61C. Though stock speeds aren't what worry me, it's the 51C idle when slightly overclocked with no voltage change.

That is probably why your idle temps are slightly higher than normal.

Doing large FFTs in Prime95 right now, seems to be holding at 61C.

I consider 61C a low temperature for an Intel processor at full load. Is this at least 4 threads?

Also are you measuring the temps using a program like coretemp and not some motherboard utility that measures some external sensor?
 
I tried that sink a few months back on a build. It was awful. I put it on at least 8 times with different methods and amounts of paste. It was just junk.

I use coretemp and speedfan (not at the same time.)

drescherjm, not always. I control it through speedfan and usually leave it at 75%. There doesn't seem to be much difference from 50-100%.

Just ran it again and it's lower this time, but also the room is cooler (20C). But like I said, I'm sure the stock cooler could do just as well. It's when overclocking that this supposedly enthusiast cooler starts to fail.

Actually my D0 runs hotter than my C0 did :confused:

My experience is that the stock cooler would have idled at 50C to 55C with 65 to 75C full load.
