So I bought it last night, installed it, but can not play. I click the play button and the PC thinks for a bit, acts like it is going to play, then stops and says:

"F.E.A.R. has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I sent the report twice, but I have no idea what the problem is, or where to start. Can someone help me please, I will be defragging today in an attempt to make it work.

I have a AMD 64 X2 3800+ 2 GB of RAM, GeForce 7800 GTX.

Mods: if I put this in the wrong place, please accept my apoligizes.

No I did not know it had a patch. I will download it and try that as well, thanks!

Hmm, what patch do I get, I see one called 1.07 patch, but it is hella big and says something about new maps?? Is that the right one?

Is this FEAR or the expansion????? You need the full version of FEAR to add the expansion "extraction point".

FEAR original is buggy. Most of the patches are for MP issues. Ive played FEAR version 1.01 since I bought it without problem. But it has crashed once in a while on start.

I'd uninstall the game, uninstall the demo if you have it loaded, then reinstall. As far as I know patching will not resolve any initial boot problems.

The expansion automatically updates you to 1.07, but again that is for MP now called FEAR Combat which is a free download.

I'd also go to Sierra's website and look at support issues, make sure your drivers are up to date for when the game was released, etc.

I have a Fear(Regular Fear, eyeball icon) problem as well .
And I've played this game on my PC before now.
I just never got to finish it before I had to repartition my HD.

The Problem: When I start the game, the screen goes black and stays there.
I can get back to the taskbar but the game won't shut off and I have
to restart the PC. I'm running the nvidia 84.21 drivers. Anyone know hot to fix
this?

Is this a patch needed problem ?
A dual core problem ?
Or something else ?

Thanks guys,
The-One

Never mind, it was a problem with ace mega codec pack. Just disable the codecs in the dashboard and all is well

If those are the drivers that have been out for a couple weeks.
Those drivers were messing my movies color up so I went back to these ones.

I had the same problem

Now I find out the game don't run at 1280 x 1024...

Anybody know how to make this game run at higher resolutions ?

Hey OP, I encountered the same problem myself and it was so frustrating for me that I created an account here to answer your question (assuming you haven't found the answer yet!). This is caused by a windows patch, patch KB917422. There is a fix for this so you don't have to uninstall the patch at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924867/

Hope this helps!

Unix, you are my hero. I am at work atm so I can not try this, but I will at lunch. Thanks so much.

No problem, it was a complete pain for me as well, nobody likes buying software and getting to use it because of a windows patch. You'd think they'd of made a patch for F.E.A.R. to get around this, but based on what the hotfix I linked you to says it looks like the problem is with a decent number of programs.

Hopefully this really is the fix to your issue!

:(

That did not work, so I called Sierra support and they think it is my old ass soundcard drivers, so I am downloading new drivers (from 2002 lol) hopefully that will work.

That sucks man, sorry to hear that  On the bright side that hotfix fixes an issue with BF 214blahblah (whatever the new one is) and Dark Messiah.

If you really want to know for sure about the sound card I'd just remove it from my computer and see if F.E.A.R. loads without it.

The other option to try if it's not the sound card is to actually remove patch KB917422 from windows. But I don't think that'll work, I know I didn't have to after the hotfix.

Sorry!

I had that error with FEAR and it ended up being kaspersky antivirus 6. It's a bug in the AV and should be fixed with the next maintenance bug. At least uninstalling the AV did it for me.

No problem Unix, thanks for your help!

I downloaded new drivers, still no luck. I will call Sierra again today at lunch and go from there.

Finally got it to work, had to get a new soundcard.

The game is great, but scaring the crap out of me!
