Hello to all!
Well, it as been years since my last (and first!) attempt at O/C.
I had made a very stable build of my Athlon 64 3800 with my DFI LanParty Ultra-D. It was extremely stable. I was proud like no-one! Back then, I followed a very good guide, The Definitive DFI A64 O/C Guide. It was very detailed and informative, with excellent step-by-step procedures.
Now, today, I have a new computer (see the specs in my sig). Things have evolved. Software and O/C Methods must have too. I think the basics should be the same tho, but I'll admit since my last O/C, it's been way too long and I feel a little bit lost.
I usually read a lot and dig the answers I seek all by myself, rarely posting and asking, but this time, to get me on the right track and have some up-to-date pointers, I'll do an exception and ask for your help, oh fellow overclockers.
In the first place, I want to know how do we proceed with Overclocking, now, in 2010. Are the steps and softwares used are the same. I doubt it. I was hoping to find a up-to-date sticky about O/C, but I didn't find one.
Here what I'm thinking :
1- I need to somehow find the maximum stable CPU settings. A few years back, I was using, following the Definitive A64 O/C Guide procedures, different settings and softwares to stress test the CPU: SuperPi 32m, then OCCT 30 min., then the 3DMark's and finally Prime95 for a day. If all passed, it was a success.
My question : As of today, is it still the same procedure, or is there new softwares that are the new way of doing things?
2- I need to somehow find the maximum stable Memory settings. A few years back, I was using, following the Definitive A64 O/C Guide procedures, different settings and softwares to stress test the memory: Memtest86+ (test#5) and if all went well with no error, again with SuperPi 32m, then OCCT 30 min., then the 3DMark's and finally Prime95 for a day. If all passed, it was a success.
Question : Here again, as of today, is it still the same procedure, or is there new softwares that are the new way of doing things?
3- With the results of steps 1 and 2, clock things together
As I did the last time, I should be able to find by reading and looking on differents forums O/C "base" settings for the motherboard (CPU and memory too) for the Overclock attempts themselves. But before I do that, I must know the "correct", if I can say it like that, procedure to follow to determine the maximum stability of my motherboard, CPU and Memory, so any tips, pointers and help will be appreciated!
Many thanks!
