I can get a pretty good deal on a Canon Rebel 2000 rigth now
Im pretty new to the SLR cameras and was wondering if it is a pretty good camera to start out on.

i had one for a day(because i bought two cameras to test out). it wasn't bad, but i think you should go with a more manual camera, you will like it in the long run.

my advice is get a cheap, used, decent camera body and spend the most on getting a nice lens.

but its all up to you. good luck.

btw- if the canon is a good deal, you can always buy it and sell it...i bought mine for 150 sold for 220:D

you might be able to pick up a used elan 7 for 200

As for lenses, I would suggest a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II or EF 50mm f1.4 USM. The first costs around $70 while the second costs around $300. I have the f/1.8 lens, and was very impressed with how sharp my photos came out.

I also picked up a Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 ATX Pro-SV zoom lens. I haven't developed any rolls of film shot using that lens yet though, so I can't speak too much about it, other than to say that it seems well built. I just couldn't justify spending the ammount the good Canon lenses cost. Reading lots of online reviews, the Tokinas seemed like a good compromise.

What he said.

"as far as lenses go"

Lenses arnt going to be cheap, for sure the canon 50mm f/1.8 is a must, and a steal at $80.

After that look towards sigma if your on a tight budget, but do your research-> www.photographyreview.com for a ton of user reviews on lenses.

If you can swing it the 28-135mm is a great lens to mount on your camera, it has all the functions of some thousand dollar L lens minus the nice glass. USM, IS...very nice to have. $400.

my advice is to go with what everybody else is saying; a 50mm to teach you photography. if you dont have the money for the 1.4, then 1.8 is really cheap.

with dslrs, its a bit harder to use the 50mm with the fov crop factor, but since youre getting film, itll be a perfect match

Meh, fuck those other suggestions. :D

On eBay you can get a pretty awesome deal on a Contax camera (say, a 139quartz) and a Zeiss lens with it (usually the AWESOME 50/1.4 Planar). Seeing the kit in the $150-250 range is common. Gets you a simple, reliable, but capable body and a great lens.

priceing the canon lens and body on ebay was about 220-260 range, so i think id probably just go with that
