Getting an early e6600

I'm building a new system and I want to stick an e6600. I don't want to wait for the april price cuts, I want the comp now. But I've heard that the earlier e6600's oc better than the newest batches. Is it still possible to snag one of the older batches, and where could I go to look for one? Just frys/comp USA? And what exactly do I need to look for?
 
No worries. All E6600 chips are built on the same Conroe core and have a Revision B2 stepping so old or new doesn't matter. It's only the new E6300 / E6400 cpus that are being built on the Allendale core which some people are having trouble overclocking to their fullest.

If you want to search for an early chip then the product code will end in SL9S8 for the early ones and the latest ones end in SL9ZL.
This code will be on the box as well as on the cpu.
 
Heh, actually latest e6600s have troubles overclocking, too. Intel improved its binning process and rumor has it, better conroes go into quadcores. Personally, I tried L642A and L630B, latter runs hotter but appears to clock higher. At least I can say, that at 1.325v, I brought the former to 3.06ghz, and latter to 3.3ghz... Can't do more testing, since all I have is intel stock cooler ATM :(

And to answer ops question - go to fry's and ask to see oem cpus, you might just be able to pick up w30 or 31 cpu... at least I checked 2 frys in socal, both had week 30 e6600s...
 
Yep! I got mine like 1 month ago and it still ocz pretty nice.
Edit: I was able to hit 3.92Ghz - very unstable and 3.7 works fine.

This is strange... anyway according to cpuz its: Revision: B2; Stepping: 6; Model/Ext: F; Family/Ext: 6; LGA775 - if that has anything to do with batch.

Edit: Is this what # batch is? - coz it doesnt actually say batch anywhere...
 
how would my cpu OC if i got it 1 month after quad core (i got it in nov). ill try get codes etc.
 
F*** - thats a mission right now to remove hsf:p + I havent got any thermal paste lying around.
Is this quite desparate?(my cpu's batch i mean)
