when buying a video card, what is more important to look for; core speed or ram speed? im replacing my radeon 7000

there is so much more when looking at video cards, what games do you play, what's your budget?

mostly the games i play are halo pc, unreal tournament, gta vice city, games like those. my maximum budget is somewhere around $170.

the only thing is the radeon 9600XT has a core speed of 500 mhz and ram speed of 600, while the 9800 pro has a core speed of 380 mhz and a ram speed of 680. would that make a difference at all?

the 9600 has 128bit memory and the 9800 has 256bit memory, thats what makes a difference

Comparing clocks on a 9600 and a 9800 makes no sense whatsoever.

Remember how everyone's always saying that "MHz don't matter" with CPUs? It's doubly so with GPUs where you're doing things in parallel.

Looking for clock-speed, when shopping for a graphics card is kinda silly; almost all "9600XT" boards are going to be clocked at the same speed (I'm not saying to not look at the numbers; you should always double check to avoid getting something like a 128-bit 9800). Look at some benches, set your price range & then get the card that fits your budget & has the extra features you want.

Before i buy a new piece of hardware I always check a couple of reviews and benchmarks, and I always ask opinions on these forums.

just trust us, your better of with the 9800 pro compared to the 9600 ( you left out the rest of the specs for both processors )

Another vote for the 9800Pro.

Just make sure to learn how to use the settings in the ATI control panel. You will be able to use FSAA and AF to make your games look a lot better.

yea im definitely getting the radeon 9800pro 256 bit version. my current card only does 32 bit, max.

Well that is color quality, the 9800pro will still do 32bit color, we are talking about the memory interface that is 256bit
