Ok guys I need your advice. im going to be getting a new computer system sometime in the next few months and need to know what I should be considering.

here are my options/ideas

-Another custom or a Dell

with the new processors out and all the new hardware out there I really dont know whats good at the moment. however I am doing my research and it seems to be the new chips from Intel ( core duo)?

anyways, let me know what you all think

James

Ps. my budget is around $2500.00

well im sort of a n00b compared to alot of the guys on this forum, but id say with a 2.5k budget you can get pretty sweet computer. are you using it for games or what? do you care about the latest and greatest? gimme some sort of guidlines to what you want it for.

imo the best latest cpus are the c2d and the greatest video cards are the new 8800s. im building a new system in jan or feb (mostly waiting on a price drop on some stuff and vista) but im getting a c2d e6600 and a 8800 gts in mine. e6600 will run me about 300 bucks right now, but im hoping for a price drop to around the mid 200s. the gts will also run about 450-500 right now.

Definintly C2D (Core 2 Duo) (which are the e6300, e6400, e6600, e6700, X6800)

Most get the e6300, e6400, or e6600 and overclock them to run faster. Do note that even though the stock speeds are low on these (for example the e6400 is 2.13GHZ) they will still outperform the Pentium 4s with higher GHZ

The latest/best graphics cards are the Nvidia 8800 Series

The latest/best SATA Hard Drives are the Western Digital Raptors

E6400 - 250$
Asus P5B Deluxe - 250$
2GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800 - 350$
8800GTS - 600$
PC power and Cooling 600w PSU or higher - 200$
19" Acer Widescreen - 200$
Case of your Choice - 200$
Good Mouse and Keyboard - 200$
Scythe Infinity CPU HSF - 75$

Total = 2225$ For your entire system... Would be one of the most powerful up there when you OC!

Add a Raptor HD if needed... Not my idea of a good purchase though, not really needed :).

These are all really high end price estimates, but I figured I'd overestimate rather than under estimate :).

id mostly be using it for school ( word processing, music, movies and some games here and there) not really into wanting the latest and the greatest, looking for something that will last me a while and something that ill be happy with.

heres what I got so far:

Case - LIAN-LI Aluminum PC-6070B PLUS-II black
Motherboard - ASUS P5B ATX LGA775
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Video Card - ASUS GeForce 7600 GT 560MHZ 256MB
Monitor - E207WFP Wide 20 Inch Flat Panel Monitor <---------DELL
Hard Drive - WD 320GB 7200RPM SATA II

suggestions are once again appreaciated,

thanks,

James

I just have to ask, as your estimate (while very good for what you are going to do) falls way short of your budget, are we talking Canadian dollars or USA dollars?

You would be quite a bit faster if you ran 2x Hard Drives in Raid0. You may want to downgrade to 2x 250gb Seagates and it will cost roughly $150. Also, since you are going with a low end build, I would only get a mediocre ram then, no reason to get the dominator ram with an E6300 that will not be used for gaming much. If you do plan on gaming, maybe step up to a better ram, the Corsair TWIN2X2048-5400c4 isn't a bad ram for right at $200 after MIR. You will also need to update your PSU, many options are available out there for aftermartket PSUs, but I would suggest maybe a Seasonic around 500w or so of power. Just a suggestion, but that 7600gt is around 115, but at bestbuy and newegg have the 7900gs for around 150, and that would be a great improvement.

we are talking in canadian dollars

what would you guys recommend for cases? I dont neeed/want anything too flashy, something basic, yet fashionable. I was thinking the Lian Li or a nice Cooler master.
