Getting a E6300 do i need DDR2 800 RAM?

well Im sorta on a budget for the memory, and I wanted to get a 2GB set for like under 199 like maybe 170-190 but do i really need ddr2 800 ram? or can I get this

OCZ 2GB Kit DDR2-667 from zipzoomfly.com

I plan on overclocking this bad boy past 3.0 so will that OCZ kit get me there? or does anyone know any better kit for under 199?
 
I use this patriot ram found here and I am running @ 450x7 fully stable with dual-prime, web surfing, photo editing, and movie watching. Right now it's $160 AR, for basically DDR2-900 performance. A bit cheaper before the rebate than the corsair after the rebate, although ymmv of course.
 
The speed at which you run your ram can limit your overclock.

The 6300 has a x7 multiplier, and its DDR2, (double), so you divide by two, meaning

DDR2-667 (aka PC2-5400) will allow you to reach 2.3Ghz on a E6300 ((667 / 2) * 7).
DDR2-800 (aka PC2-6400) will allow you to reach 2.8Ghz on a E6300 ((800 / 2) * 7).
DDR2-1066 (aka PC2-8500) will allow you to reach 3.7Ghz on a E6300 ((1066 / 2) * 7).

You get the idea.

(Of course in reality your ram may not be the bottleneck, other things like you boards max FSB will probably be reached first)
 
Good RAM tends to overclock well in general. One of the Intel employees who posts on these boards (Poncho) said that OCZ isn't the best though, and from previous things he has said that have proven to be true, I trust his opinion in general. The Patriot RAM has been shown by others to do extremely well in OC situations. Personally, I would go for the Patriot.

dude the dude that posted before you said that he got 3.1ghz on that patriot ram which is not DRR2 800, and Ive seen ppl on this forum get like 3.0+ with ddr2 800 sticks so i dont think thats entirly accurate

i think I'll get passed 2.3ghz quite easy

Agreed, Patriot may be the next Micron, their RAM was great, it wasn't ultra-cheap, but cheaper than so called 'Overclockers RAM' that had nothing but a shinier heat sink and mayber some worthless LEDs on it.

I have gotten higher although over time I get rounding errors when priming, and I don't want to risk data corruption. I have only just started testing my system though and I'm confident I can get it stable at higher clocks, especially if I up the voltage a bit. At any rate, the ram has yet to be a bottleneck as best as I can tell, and if anything it is the crappy NB heatsink which gets hella hot.

Ahem, thats because the ram is overclocked, and thus no longer running @ DDR2-800 spec, OR he is running at a lower fsb to memory ratio. My post is accurate to spec. You need to understand how these things work, in order to pull off the big oc numbers.
 
well yeah I understand that, as I overclocked the hell out of my Opteron for awhile i was on PC3200, and I was able to be 1:1 up to 2.5ghz, but w/e

I mean I understand how to overclock and that it would probably be best to get ddr2 800 BUT as i have read here that some 975 boards dont support ddr2 800 yet, and i would need a shitty stick to change the bios or somthing like that

but that patriot ram looks good and im gonna buy it, thanks for the link dude

No, Drexion is correct. What he suggested is that if you want to run your FSB and RAM frequency at a ratio of 1:1, then it is correct (granted of course your motherboard can even reach those FSB's.) For example:

Default: FSB 266MHz * 7 = 1.86GHz with DDR2 533(2*266) PC4200
Overclock: FSB 333MHz * 7 = 2.33GHz with DDR2 667(2*333) PC5400

You get the idea...

People will use dividers to overclock more either ram or fsb to benefit which is best and that's how they achieve higher overclocks with lower speed ram. Or visa versa.
