alright, my grand parents said that they would give me $250 as a graduation gift, and i have decided that i want to get a nice digital camera to bring to college with me.

the two cameras i have narrowed it down to are the cannon a70 or the Kodak dx6340

the cannon would end up costing a little over $200 with shipping and all that, and it seems to have a great set of features, and the sample pictures i have seen with this camera look great. i like how it has the manual controlls and it looks like a nice durable camera.

on the other hand the kodak is about $175 with shipping, so i would have some money left over to spend on whatever else. the kodak has fewer features, but it looks like it would get the job done. i would prefer to have manual controlls since i think it would be alot of fun to mess around with it. right now i have a pentax zx-60 slr and i love taking pictures with that

which camera do you think would be the better deal?

also, is the Cannon a60 good? it seems like a good value for $140 shipped

let me know what you think!

thanks guys,

i think just about everyone here is going to recommend the A70. by all accounts, you really can't go wrong with the A70, it's gotten nothing but rave reviews and high recommendations.

the A60 is basically the same, but with lower mega-pixels.

$149. + tax, Canon A60 2.0 MP @ Office Depot

-$50. Rebate from Office Depot; until June 30
-$20. off purchases of over $100. heres the link http://www.mygo.com/coupons/browse.php?cat=28

Taxes not adjusted.

$89. with rebate and eventually MIR in mail for my purchase in SA, Texas.

Hope this helps out and saves you some $$$ for maybe more memory and other digi cam extras.

I was a Sony fan of cameras until I purchased a Canon S400.

Here is a link to some great A60 photos.

thanks for that info slza, i will have to look into that to see if that deal is valid around here. it would be nice to be able to get it for that cheap, then i would have plenty of money left over for a nice big memory card, a case and a new tripod :)

right now it is between the a70 and the a60 depending on if that deal is going on around here. forget the kodak

Memory 256 or higher (more the better) and a very good adjustable tripod will set you for some great photos.

Glad to help and let me know what you get.

You using it for college right? In that way i highly suggest the Digital Elph series, because its small and you can carry it around you. (That is what you want right?) Unless you buying the camera for special occasion and artsy photo, then the A60/A70 is great for that since it has a lot of controls.

S200 or SD100 is what i recommend if you are going to take the camera with you whereever you go. 128mb flash card is all you need since it takes about 300 photos set on medium quality. And your dorm will be close, and you will probably go home after your pictures to trasnfer them on the computer.

Alright, i ordered that a60 from office depot and a 256 mb memory card, and i am still under budget :)

so far i am at $186, and i would still like to get a case and maybe a new tripod. i have an old tripod i use with my pentax, but it might be nice to get a new tripod for a new camera :)

thanks for all the help guys, and now i am off to sit on my front step and wait for the package to come :)

thanks again, and i will post some pics once it comes in :)

i was just looking around ebay for some ideas of acessories for the a60 and i came across the underwater case (WP-DC700)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50506&item=3820848011&rd=1

i think it would be sweet to be able to bring my new digital camera SCUBA diving with me.

does anyone have any experience with these cases? do they really work good? i would hate to ruin my camera by using a low quality caseing.

let me know, and thanks again everyone!

Beware, that Office Depot rebate is only for in-store purchases . I was about to buy one but my local store was out of stock.

damn, i did not even notice that, i will try sending it in anyways. all i have to loose is my 37 cents for a stamp

i went to the office depot store today just to check out the camera and to pick up some a new cartrage for my printer, and they did not have it in stock either.

i guess i will just have to try my luck and send in the order confirmation.

or i could go to the store and buy one if they get them in stock, then copy the recept and return it.
