getting a 30-cap 3.0C. cooling?

hey guys, im new to p4's (im typically an AMD guy) and im getting this chip cheap (and ive got a board lying around from a mobile project) so im looking to overclock the snot out of it and encode my DVD's :D

anyway, what kind of cooling would you suggest? i wanna test the limits of it, and i dunno if my zalman will go for that :p maybe the XP-90c? i have an Abit IS7-E to play with this thing, and im hoping to hit around 4ghz with it.

im also getting some prescotts - but i was under the impression that these OC better so i was gonna try it out first - am i correct?
 
I got a 30 capper 3.0C that hit 3.6 or so stable at stock Vcore with my Vantec aeroflow I (a nice quiet HSF, but not known for penultimate cooling ability) with an idle temp of about 39C that went up to about 52C under load. The HSFs you mention should work even better.
 
so the zalman cnps7000b-cu will be good enough?

that would be totally awesome, i wouldnt have to dish out more cash!
 
youll be fine with that cooler. it should safely handle a cpu to ~3.5ghz.
 
I think it would be fine. From the rumors on teh intarweb, it seems like the 3.0C 30 cappers are 3.0 Extreme editions with half of the cache disabled, so supposedly the core is bigger and thus has better heat transfer to the IHS. But then again, this is just a rumor.
 
You're not likely to hit 4 ghz with a 3.0C on air cooling. On water it's still a bit iffy. The Prescott has a better chance to hit 4, but then you have the added stress on the MOSFETs, and more heat. If you really want to try for 4, I would invest in a 3.2E E0.
 
Sorry if this question seems a little dumb, but how can you tell if you have a 30cap chip? and are they easy to find?

take hte chip out of the socket and look on the underside - if there is a perfect grid of 30-caps, you have a 30-cap chip.

i am the OP :p

and no, there is not - intel didnt do anything special for the chips, they were luck of the draw when you bought them. they were sold just like all the ohter p4's were, so youll have to take the chip out and have a looksee.

30cap cooling should be the same as the other models, only their average overclock is different. I dont have a 30cap and i can get 3.63 (havent gone higher cause im lazy) with 1.65vcore on air so i'd expect you to get around this.

The prescotts overclock on average better than any of the C chips but they run like 1.5 to 2 times as hot. If you want to air cool and overclock the C will be a better choice but to get to 4ghz you'll probably need a E on water.

the extra heat (and stress) thats generated on the power mosfets is something that is quite often overlooked.

most people dont realize just how hot some mosfets can get when you're trying to squeeze every last drop of speed out of a CPU. the mosfets start to get extremely hot which in turn can cause alot of system instability.

thats one of the reason(s) why I like my Abit Fatal1ty board. it has the OTES cooling on the mosfets and keeps them at or below 65C at maximum. my older IC7-G board use to easily peg 85 to 90C with its mosfets. :eek:

I've had the same problems with watercooling my 3.4E. The mosfets always run hotter than the CPU. I heat sinked them and have a 80mm fan blowing directly on them, now they don't get over 55c. I wonder how some of those newer HSF units that have the fan blowing air across a vertical heatpipe out the case keep the mosfets cool. There doesn't appear to be any airflow directly on the base of the processor.
 
Heasked about a 30 Capper3.0C cuz that is what he is getting. That's it!! The next thing you read is Abit mosfet temps and Prescotts. He is not getting that gear!! He has an Abit IS-7E and a 30 cap 3.0C . I run a 30 cap 3.0C and they really are a nice processor. They overclock extremely well. If you get some G.Skill 4400LE or some OCZ 3200 Plat. Rev.2
or some Patriot 3200 XBL you should be able to get it right up to around 255 fsb to 260fsb on air with a good cooler and good case air. Run any of these memories at 1:1
With PAT enabled and you will easily surpass 6gigs of bandwidth. And for those who think that the 3.0C don't like it over 4000mhz. Here is my Daily clock.
