a friend of mine gave me his hdd to try and recover as its decided its not formatted anymore. he needs as much stuff off it as he can get (photos of his kids etc).

i have the program getdataback and i have used it before to recover my music that disappeared. but i used it last in xp and when i went to use it in vista it will not start.

when i start it, it just gives the error "getbackdata has stopped working" etc. i tried making it run in xp sp2 mode and made it run as admin but same result.

any help or an alternative way to get his data back would be most appreciated.

You could try Recuva. I run that from a USB Flash Drive, and it works great.

Thankyou for the sugestions i tryed that recuva program and it came up with no files. the drive is also coming up as only 120gb and its a 200gb hdd so im thinking its stuffed. he got it 2nd hand so it may of done this before

Have you tried ZAR yet? It should have no problem recovering raw data off that drive. The trial lets you save 4 folders per scan........but if there's a lot of data, you're better off buying the program.
Recuva is only for recovering files you accidentally deleted, not a formatting or partition issue.
