get new comp now or wait?

right now i have d3ll 8100. P4 1.3, 384 RDRAM, ASUS 9600XT..... my comp is very slow due to my cpu. since its a dell there is nothing i can do about. i want to get a new comp and been waiting for about a year. 1st is it was new amds, then price cut, then 939, then 939 .90mm, then PCI-E for amd..... now everything came out but ppl say that new double core cpus are coming out soon (or something like that)... this comp will probly be for the next 2.5 years until i go to college. i will probly get a new video card in a year or something. i am looking right now to get:

DFI "LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D" or MSI "K8N Neo4 Platinum"
AMD 3200 .90mm and OC to 3500 speeds
1gb RAM
ATI Radeon x800XL
Antec NeoPower PSU
Case
total is around $1200.

So do you think i should buy the rig now which is in a week, or wait?
 
Looks good to me. If you wait for new tech or price cuts, you will wait forever since new stuff is always coming out.

yeah thats what i am thinking. but i am spending almost all of my cash on it and i dont have a stable income, so i just wnat to make sure that i am not making a mistake.
 
buy a new computer when your current one either isnt fast enough to do something, or the increase in productivity is worth the money spent.
 
Theres is never a perfect time. Theres always something new coming out. If you wait for the new stuff its always expensive and sometimes buggy or defects, if you wait until the price drops or wait until they fix the problem, there will be new things coming out soon, so you see the broken record. The perfect time is when you are ready and you think its perfect, just make sure you get the best bang for your buck and you will be allright.

i cant really multi-task with it anymore. if i am playing a game, i cant have anything else open and i can play surrent games. when will dual core cpus come out? also since i will not upgrade for a while, i dont think there is a point to wait for it. remember how much was 3500 when it 1st came out?

i want to get X800XL coz it is as good as 6800GT and cheaper and 3200 .90 so i can OC that beast

Dual CPUs cannot be used together to perform a single task, so they are only good when you have multiple programs open. Thus, for encoding, decoding, startup, and games, its useless, and you might as well have one 2.8ghz. But if you commonly run tons of progs that each take up some cpu, its worth it.

I would say upgrade, because there is never a right moment...Dual core are going to be expensive anyways, and I doubt the prices of current tech is going to drop that much. Your system is old, you might want to sell it for extra $$$. Maybe look at other cards other than the x800xl...
 
Upgrade now and stick with the components you've listed. The X800XL is the best high-performance card for the money as long as you can pick it up for the $299 RRP. It's as fast overall as the $399 6800GT.

Dual cores coming 3rd quarter, they reckon which could be a fair while off. Games will need to be coded to use them so that'll be further off again. Windows works well using a single CPU so don't worry about it.

I'll echo the comments of those above who stated that there will always be something better just around the corner. If you wait, you'll never buy anything.
 
I basically did my last upgrade when adobe premiere was too slow to bear.

Went from a p3-933 to a athlon 3200+. nice improvement.

I would look at what you play and what you want to do.
The longer you wait the more pc you will get for your money.
Given the age of what you got, I wouldn't look at any partial upgrades to get you by, just buy all new tech to make sure nothing is a bottleneck.

I would go with a 6800gt or NU but I hestitated to mention because I dont like starting ATI vs nVidia wars.
 
well the thing is that PCI-E 6800GT is about $50 more and performance wise not that much better.

Well, then its a good deal.
 
If the prices are close, get the GT. They are proven* to be good overclockers and most of them reach Ultra speeds and beyond. Early signs indicate that the XLs do NOT overclock particularly well. If there's a big difference in price, or you don't intend to overclock, stick with the XL

* - there are no guarantees with overclocking :D

i decided to hold of the video card until sunday/monday to see if any deals come up. the thing is, i will not be overclocking like mad. just a little bit. when XL is 370 and GT is more then 450, i'll stick with XL
