get boinc'd, get paid

I remember reading about them when they first proposed the idea. I honestly haven't kept up. The latest one to pop up is from Ripple Labs giving XRP (their version of crypto currency) for running WCG. Ripple Labs however require you to join their team in the process.

Edit: This is where I first heard about it... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8674

Edit2: The real question is does this work alongside the Ripple Labs XRP rewards? I don't want to leave the team, so no Ripple Labs for me. :)

Edit3: After glancing over a few of their older posts, I remembered that they didn't really know much about BOINC or its community. One statement was talking about how BOINC supported CUDA quite a bit but only supported the low end AMD cards which works great for Gridcoin...However, this is just ignorance. BOINC supports the latest and greatest from both nVidia and AMD. It also supports the newer Intel offerings. They really should have consulted one of the larger BOINC communities and/or projects before trying to educate new people on its workings.

Here are some links from WCG's forums in regards to Ripple Labs

and if you do a search, there are a few more that may also have additional info. WCG is aware of payout scheme and say that they are watching it for any potential negative impact (such as cheating by turning in fake results) towards WCG.

Ripple Labs is the fastest growing WCG crunching team at this point. They just started on 11/8/13 and they just passed the [H] DC team. Their crypto currency is backed by bitcoins (Investors put up bitcoins to back their KTM currency) whether it adversely affects WCG or not is yet to be determined. I have no idea if it has actually brought more people to doing crunching or if existing crunchers are just switching teams. Only time will tell if it is going to be profitable or if it just a scam, My guess is that at best it will pay a portion of folding / crunching cost.

It's made somebody like me consider doing it who otherwise would be mining something pointless.

I think it is bringing a lot of people who mine bitcoins and have equipment that is needing a simpler cryptocurrency to mine. So, there are some new, some current, and some former crunchers joining their numbers. I personally don't want to learn the ins and outs of each currency and also am more dedicated to my team than that. As far as gridcoin, it sounds a little interesting, but I'm not that interested in cryptocurrency to really give it a shot.

mkrohn, if gridcoin is of interest and they let you stay on with [H], the Commandos would love to have you. If you go that route and successfully set it up, you may even want to create a guide with pictures for others to follow. I'm sure they would appreciate it.
