Well, as I see the 6950s are now becoming unlockable (from threads on here), im wondering if I should pick up a 6950 now, or wait a bit more for fall? I dont need to get a vid card right now, as Im not sure when ill build a new PC this year, Sometime in the next few months id guess. Right now, I gotta finish putting my Grizzly back together, and get ready for camping season. But Id like to play Crysis, Crysis 2, Metro, Skyrim and a few others throughout this year. So was thinking it might be a good time to buy one now, since the new ones might not unlock, and the latest cards didnt seem to make a big hit on pricing.

So what do you think? And how can I tell if it can be unlocked?

Is the computer in your sig really what you're running? If so, there would be next to zero benefit putting a monster card into that machine if you're really still sporting a P4 (not to mention you may blow that PSU). If you wanna play the games listed, you'll just need to start from scratch, simple as that. If that build is not current and you actually have something more modern, then it all depends on what card you currently have and how much of an upgrade it'll give you. All the reference models should unlock and there are some okay deals going on with rebates.

As far as I know, the reference design 6950's are still unlockable, and they've been out for a while. There was a rumor that AMD was going to fix this, but I don't think they have...though they've had time.

I would wait. If you don't have the rest of the PC to go along with the video card, then there is no point. If you have at least a core2 or Phenom-2/athlon-2 at ~3.2Ghz (which will still be a bottleneck, esp. if it's only a dual-core), then go ahead.

A few months from now: At the very worst there will still be used unlockable 6950's for sale. At best, there will be price drops, and you may consider getting a real 6970 or a slightly less expensive 6950.

I'm not sure they will further update the higher performance GPUs of this 40nm generation, but perhaps we'll hear something new about the 28nm GPUs within the next few months.

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1599283 - So far, this 6950 deal seems good (assuming the rebate works). I've been debating between this, or a $130 - $160 GTX 460 1GB or HD6850 1GB...or just waiting

This is actually what I've been considering too. I had planned for a better video card when I originally built but ended up getting just a decent card. It's a tough choice to either buy or wait as Archmage had stated.

Saw the HIS deal and I am on the fence now. The 6950 seems pretty nice and my single 5870 while still pretty good seems a bit lonely in my new 650D...

Granted a single 6950 would not be a huge upgrade for me... but two 6950s and another monitor = WINNING?

I recently upgraded from 2 GTX 260s to 2 Asus (ref) 6950s (shader unlocked and oc'd). I tripled my Vantage scores on stock settings...The prices are dipping too (HIS cards especially). For a friend's build, I have 2 of the HIS 6950s on the way. Hoping to get these unlocked/oc'd too. Definitely worth the $$$...:D

I will be building new, my current Desktop has AGP graphics lol. But Ive read that new sku/serials are not unlockable, so im wondering if I should grab up an unlockable one, shelf it, and put it in in a month or so, whenever I build. Or wait it out, and see if prices drop (dont see them dropping since there are no new cards scedualed to come out above, that will force a price down).

Seems picking one up, and trying to unlock it would be smarter. Since the 1155 build will be pretty soon.

Right now im gaming on my HDX18, with a 9600M

I bought two MSI R6950s last week and they unlocked without issue. I would say that as long as you stay with "reference" designed boards you will most likely be OK.
