Hey guys,

so ... my kid is asking me for a computer ... right now i've upgraded my rig with a 1080Ti.

The system is :
4690K @ 4.6Ghz ( delid )
MSI Z97 Gaming 7
32Gb HyperX Savage 2400Mhz ( DDR3 )
2 x 128Gb 840 Pro SSD Raid 0
2 x 256Gb 850 Evo SSD Raid 0
1 x 960 Pro 512Gb
1 x WD Black 500Gb
MSI GTX1080Ti Seahawk X

I have a "good deal" on a 4790K ( good batch ) going on ... just need to decide "fast";

Since i have a MSI Gaming 5 Z97 & my old GTX980 laying around my idea was to get this 4790K for myself, remove 16Gb from my system and the WD Black 500Gb and the kid would have a cool rig to play with for now

The thing is, should i skip the 4790K and spend some more money and get a full 8600K system instead or in your opinion i should hang to my current Z97 for some time until somewhere next year and then pull the plug if i want to upgrade?

Btw, this system is used for:

1) Gaming
2) User Interface design work
3) Front-end coding

Thanks :)

8700k should help you with your compile times.

If you are using your rig to make actual money then you can probably justify the upgrade.

8600k probably isn't worth it for the extra cost since you already have 2 z97 mobos and are reusing half your ram.

The good thing about the 8700k option is that you can probably do a 4.7 ghz "overclock" without actually compromising stability at all, which should be good for doing "real work".

I'd say get this 4790k anyway (don't forget to delid for the best results with something like RockIT 88). Then depending on your needs either just give 4690K + Gaming 5 combo to your kid while using 4790k for personal needs till Ice Lake / whatever mainstream 8-core intel cpu come out (not sure if we'll see one on z390 platform, but definitely not on z370). Or sell/trade/whatever 4690K + Gaming 5 combo and get yourself 8700k, while letting son enjoy 4790k + 980 rig, which is still just great for 1080p gaming.

I'd just hang on. Going to spend lots of money for the 8700K/mobo and not see much performance gains. My only question is why do you have so many SSDs in raid 0 arrays?

Normally, I'd say not to invest any more in a product line that's EOL - but you have all the components less the CPU, so may as well get some use out of them. For a 4-core the 4790 is still one of the top performers at stock, and can be a modest OCer, I wouldn't call it a waste of money so long as you aren't paying retail.

My 4790K and my friends' did just fine at 4k with 980 Ti SLI or a normal 1080. The smoothness is better on my 7700K at 5ghz because minimum framerates are better so it's a better overall experience but I'd say it's a pretty minor difference overall unless you get a hell of a deal.

Just legacy stuff ... this was a tryout and I still have lots of content in the RAID0. Since its still going strong ... I'm keeping like this :)

After thinking and thinking, although I would love to just jump on the bandwagon of the new arch ... I guess I'm going to "re-allocate" my budget.
So yeah, I'm going to get the 4790K, delid, play around to see how good it is and maybe update my case and cooling.
Thank you all guys :)
