hey all, uncle needs a general purpose PC (no gaming) and really only strenuous task will be dvd/blu ray ripping. I was going to customize a PC for him from iBuyPower because of their customization options and because he lives across the country and i can't build it for him myself!

thinking of: thinking of z77 base with i7-3770k, 8gb ram, 120 gb intel 520, 3tb data/media drive, blu ray reader/cd burner.

any reason to go with amd setup?

full computer except monitor (don't think i need a discrete gpu though). definitely want ssd os drive and 3tb data/media drive

Yeah, unless you really hate your Uncle for some reason, don't spec him a PC from iBuypowerPC or CyberpowerPC since they're well known for shoddy construction work and poor customer support. In other words, they're the kind of PC boutique you'd only recommend to other people if you absolutely want to screw them over. Even prebuilt HPs (not as good as Dell) are better built than some CyberpowerPCs and IbuypowerPCs PCs.

I would recommend any of these other PC boutiques instead:
Puget Systems
Maingear
Velocity Micro.

Since your uncle is only ripping DVD/blu-ray and not actually re-encoding them, you don't need a Core i7 CPU at all. Ripping speed is all based on the blu-ray/DVd drive's speed, not the CPU. As such, your uncle actually be fine with a Core i3 CPU and the fastest blu-ray/DVD drive available if DVD/blu-ray ripping is really the most strenuous task he'll be doing. I do concur about the SSD however: A SSD will make a world of difference in the performance of the PC.
