Guys,

I have a machine that is currently running an ASUS A7V, 256MB PC100, and 100GB of drive with an athlon 1.1 and a radeon 9700 pro. My PS is a 300w Enermax.

I'm looking to get this machine able to play my current games (Planetside/Galaxies) at better frame rates. I had originally decided to get 2 512 PC133 DIMMs from Newegg, but am now wondering if I should bump the processor too. Money is tight right now, and I'm looking for bang for the buck ($300 max).

In another forum, people recommended the following solution:

ABIT "NF7-S" nForce2 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL - $91
Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 8T - OEM - $86
AMD 45 Watt Mobile Athlon XP 2500+, 266 FSB, 512K Cache - OEM - $88
Total: $265

Yes, that would be a major performance upgrade that would put you at least on par with where most people are.

Be warned, Crucial = suck

I don't know if you plan on OCing your box, but the 2500 only has a FSB of 333 so 400MHz memory is overkill. Since you have such a tight budget, I would say to get some pc2700 and get either corsair, mushkin, or kingston instead.

Your PS may end up being a stability problem but you won't find that out until you build.

What the hell are you talking about? Crucial RAM is probably the best RAM for reliability and people who don't overclock.

OP: Your PSU will be just fine for what you have, don't worry.

i second that, Crucial RAM is great for not OCing, for OCing, though, you would want to go w/ something like Mushkin or Corsair...

I also agree that Crucial is a great company. Don't listen to what that other guy said. :p
