I have a gigabyte s939 motherboard with an X2 4400+ cpu. The powersupply died (squealing, high pitched whine, and the psu fan not running), and the system would spin up the fans, but not post. No beeps, nothing. I replaced the psu, and still cannot get the system to post. Could the dead psu have killed the motherboard? What else could I check? I plugged it into a wall socket instead of the powerstrip I use for it, just to see if that might be it. Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, the bad PSU could have sent a irregular voltage to the motherboard, shorting out a component.

There are a lot of troubleshooting steps you can take. You can test your new PSU with a voltmeter, you can test the motherboard with another new PSU, you can replace the CMOS battery, you can set the CMOS back to default or even get a new motherboard.
 
I don't have, or know how to use a voltmeter, heh. I did reset the bios. Thank you for the advice.
 
Go down to one stick of ram and cpu or even just cpu and see if you get any beeps. Does board have it's own speaker or does it need to be hooked to a speaker. I know I'm used to my boards having speakers and my last one didn't so I never heard a thing till I got a new case and hooked it up to the case speaker.

Unfortunately something may have been toasted though.

Sometimes the cmos reset does not want to take unless you pull the battery.
