I wasn't sure where to post this, as it's just a general question and I didn't feel the need to sign up for a legal forum to ask something you guys on here would probably know.
I was looking into buying a dashboard camera/DVR to record video in case of an accident. I originally wanted something that could "see" the license plate of a car from at least 10 feet away. However, I really don't think I need 1080p resolution (which would provide that), and 720p would be fine for my purposes.
The reason I originally cared about being able to view plate numbers was so that I could provide proof of who the vehicle is/was... but... do I really need proof at all? (and therefore, 1080p?). It has a microphone, so I could always "read out" the plate numbers to the camera.
If you get into an accident (and it's not your fault), do you need to provide the license plate number to authorities (or the insurance company) in order to be fully covered/reimbursed? I'm not the type to go and file a lawsuit... and that's why I'm questioning this... plus I'm cheap since I'm a student.. so I wanted to know if I should save the extra 20 bucks between 720p and 1080p
I'm not buying this to play around with, really.. and that's why quality doesn't matter. I'm just trying to cover my @$$.
Any help would be appreciated. You guys know how it is looking online for hours (days?) for a gadget/part and having trouble deciding, I'm sure
