This is probably a noob question, but here it goes: If i were to buy a card that's meant for 8x AGP, like this FX5900 for example, and i had a motherboard that only supported 4x AGP, like this one, would it work at all? Trying to upgrade for doom3 without spending $400.. Thanks in advance for any advice.

As long as your motherboard supports 4x as well (and almost all do) you will be fine. The card will simply run at 4x. Which shouldn't hurt the performance too much unless you are playing at high rez and detail where bandwidth needs are greater.
