I own the above mentioned video card and I have had it for a long time. Except now, the HSF sounds horrible and is getting louder and louder. Is is possible to run this card without a HSF? I really only play Halflife: TFC which isnt that labor intensive.

No unless you want a toasted card in a few minutes.

Get a chrome orb to replace the stock heatsink/fan and apply some artic silver to gpu core, it does wonders :D

No, but neither is a new videocard when your cooler finally fails. Sounds like the bearings on the fan are going bad.
 
The fan died on my old BFG ti4200. I ran it with no fan for several months problem free. My case does have nice air flow though with a side mounted 80 mm blowing over the heatsink.
Not to say it's a good idea, but it probably won't kill it depending on conditions. The stock fan on the heatsink doesn't really do much.
 
The only reason it survived was the fan blowing over it. If you had not had that your card might have died. To the OP I say get a new cooler asap.
 
I had an Asus 9280TD (I think that was the model number) Geforce4 Ti 4200-8X, it's fan died after about two weeks of use (was the reference Nvidia one) I don't know exactly how long it ran like that but I believe it was at the very least one week. (I noticed an ever so slight drop in the noise of the PC) It didn't crash one during gaming but it did run hot as hell. Honestly I'd get a replacement HSF for your card just in case, no point in killing a perfectly functioning card.
