GeForce 8600GTS Info?

OCWorkbench says they have confirmation that the GeForce 8600GTS & 8600GT will have 32 stream processors while the 8500GT will have only 16.

It is confirmed that the 80nm processor technology 8600GTS, 8600GT has 32 Stream processors and the 8500GT has 16 Stream processors. The 8600GTS draws a maximum power of 71W, 8600GT at 43W and 8500GT at 40W. The number of transistors on 8600GTS and 8600GT is 289 million while the 8500GT has 210 million transistors. Shader clk of the 8600GTS is 1450MHz, 8600GT is 1180MHz and 8500GT is 900MHz.

My rig looks very similar to yours... what I want to know is how an A64/Opty in the mid 2Ghz range fairs with all of these new cards. I also have a 6800 and I want to know if my cpu can even drive any of these new cards.

I know that I am not alone in wondering if my mid 2Ghz Opty will be holding an 8800GTX behind... and if so it might be better to get a cheaper variety (like the 8600GT).

I haven't seen a videocard upgrade guide in a _long_ time. Anandtech used to do them... where they would take a whole slew of processors and run a gamut of video cards with them... that way you could get an idea of how a video card would perform in your system. Anyone know of any guides like this for the current generation of video cards?

LOL I would hope so. The 8600s should theoretically be equal to at least the 7900GTs if not the GTXs. I'm running a 7900GS in Vista with Aero and Source based gaming is fine for me. Then again, I think you knew that, judging by your eye roll. LOL

Well, the 7600GT was about equal to the 6800. As I said above, the 8600 should be equal to at least a 7900GT if not the GTX.

so this is the low range of the 8XXX? making the 8800GTS mid range? just wondering if this will be any kind of upgrade over a 7800, i'm guessing not

hmmm 8600gts only draws 71w, hope they can make it so no pci-e power plug is needed.

I miss-quoted the 8800GTX and GTS power draw.

The 8800GTX is about 145W during gaming and 180W peak.
The 8800GTS[I] should [/I]be about 100W during gaming and about 134W peak (I have not been able to find straight info on this.)

If I had to buy something this month, it would probably be an 8600GTS (if you have not figured it out I am Power/heat limited).

Right now, I think my "perfect" card would be an under-clocked 8800GTS, so i get 96 vertex procs (again, power-consumption oriented).

Well the Asus 7600GS [TOP] 600core/1400memory was faster then the 6800GT. It is also based on the 80nm process. I score 6130 3dmark05 points with it. In 3dmark06 I scored 3900 points. As for your main question even if the 8500/8600GT was not much faster it has something the 6 series dosen't. DX10 support! So it is a decent upgrade performance aside. I got my eye on the 8600GT myself....
