The fan on this thing is soo ****ing loud... is there any way to reduce the noise or fan speed? I'm currently installing windows right now... so I was wondering if this is possible software wise as well. Thanks!

By the way this is the new revision eVGA 7900GT that just came out at newegg.

Yea, you can always buy an aftermarket hsf, or you could get an overclocking program, as many of them have sliders to reduce the RPM of your gfx fan. I am not suggesting you oc, just that you use the program to lower your fan speed. Also, the noise might be a combination of hdd spin, disc drive spin, etc, as you are installing an OS.

I'm 100% sure it's the videocard because simply stoping the fan on the card for a sec. with my finger is a big difference in noise... what OC program do you guys recommend me using to lower the fan speed on this thing? Doesn't nVidia have one?

Not much of an OCer myself, but i believe there is a program called coolbits that will work. Correct me if i am wrong. Anyways, there is a bunch, you just gotta find one. Also, Im not sure if its a good idea to stop a fan with your finer, not so much because it could hurt your finger, but more so because it might damage the cooling on your gfx card.

I like RivaTuner

ATI tool has a version that works on nVidia cards... it has a very in-depth temperature/fan speed tool

Of course you're going to hear the fan on the video card if you have the case opened and sitting there stopping it with your finger (which can't be good for the card).

I have the same card in my Dell XPS 600 and I can hardly notice it with my case closed. Yeah, when I first boot the PC it spins up and somewhat noticeable but then quiets down. But my case is big and I can hear my HDD over the 7900GT. Of course I do have a WD 150gb 10k Raptor which aint exactly the quietest HDD. But still, I don't find the 7900GT reload to be "soo ****ing loud" IMHO.

I have been building computers for over 4 years now and I know what I'm doing. I have infact closed my case and I ONLY touched the fan of the video card once barely stopping it to make sure thats where the noise was coming from...

Anyways, I installed the drivers for the card and the noise went away. Thanks anyways guys. :D

Hey Overwhelming, glad to hear you got it working with the new drivers. I'm sure you know what you're doing and all. It just didn't sound like a good thing to do but I guess if you just touched the fan to stop it for a sec or two I suppose no harm.

Now that it's running smoother how do you like the card? I'm curious to know exactly which drivers you installed? Did you install the ones off the disk or did you DL from eVGA or nVidia? Which version? Would like to know how yours is working and if you're having any issues?

P.S. I also posted in another [H]thread which is discussing the 512mb version of the 7900GT. If you have the time I'd like to hear your comments in that thread as well.

You can change the fan speed of a 7900GTX, "not" on the 7900 "GT", at least, I have not found one yet that will change the speed on my GT.....and I have tried a couple...
