Hi-

I was so close to ordering parts for a new PC: A64 3500+, 1GB RAM, etc, but my plans hit a brick wall because I can't find a 6800GT either in stock or not insanely above the MSRP. My current system is a XP 2000+, 512MB PC2100, KT266A MoBo, and Geforce2 TI. I notice that the 6800 nu are readily available for reasonable prices, so what I want to know is will the performance of the 6800nu be seriously limited by my CPU in a game such as Doom 3? Will I be able to play smoothly with medium quality at 800x600 just by changing the video card to a 6800nu? If I could, it would be nice because then it would hold me over until s939 PCI-e motherboards hit the market.

Thanks for the Help,

I play in medium quality, 800x600 in a XP 2000+, 512MB PC3200, GF4 Ti4200. Smoothly most of the time.
Your future system would surely play it, at least, at high quality, 1024x769.

Yeah, there's no doubt my future system would run on high. But I just wanted to know if it would be worth adding a 6800nu to my XP 2000+, 512MB PC2100, KT266A system and if I would be able to have all the effects on. Basically, I want to know how well it would run compared to my cousin's P4 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 128MB 9800 Pro system. On his system, I was playing on medium settings and I was very impressed with the quality and I wish to have the same experience on my system.

I have a Athlon 2400, 768DDR 2100 and a BFG 6800NU and it plays great for me. I usually run it on 1024x768 medium, just for the fact it only have the 128MB of vid. memory. It can be run on high and ultra but it studders a little. You should be happy w/performance. I am.

I get 8000 3dmark03 at stock speeds with this setup.

if i were you, go ahead and upgrade your system if you want and then add the geforce later. I would not get a lower quality card becuase its available and it holds the name 6800. Its like the 9800 SE which is way lower than spec of the origional 9800pro's just becuase of the name 9800. Wait untill you find the 6800's ultra, etc.

Ive got a 2.5 P4 on a asus p4pe board. 512mbs of 2700 ram and a evga 6800. High wont run I suspect from my 4xagp bs. I run on 1024x768 and medium gfx. No lag except when I open some crazy new area and then I rebound in a sec with no problem. The 6800 is great get a evga Im abuot to trade mine in for a gt 100$ is well worth the 1ghz and 4 pipelines. But if you wnat it now the 6800 is your only choice. The 6800 has overpowered Nascar racing season,SWG and countless other games I have. Taken them all to the max settings with 4xaa and it runs better than my 5600 on low.

Now I'm pretty confused as to what I should do. The way I see it, from what the others have said, I could just spend $290 on a Geforce 6800nu now and enjoy Doom 3 (the way its meant to be played?). But will this allow me to put off upgrading for another year?

go to www.evga.com

they have a step up program get a nu now from newegg or somewhere and keep everything in perfect shape just use the card. Send it and the differnce in money between that and the GT within three months and they will send you a GT. But if the nu is good enough and it will be just keep it.

Dude spend the extra cash and get a 6800 gt heck I spend 470 on mine and even paid 27 for overnight shipping. Its well worth it dude, forget the NU version, you will kick yourself in the pants!!

Why the hell did you do that? Damn almost $500 on a vid card is freaking rediculous.

Who's you daddy? I want to know... :D

Yeah, $500 is way too much to spend on a card with an MSRP of $400. I have enough money to easily pay the inflated price...but it's the principle of the matter ;) Anyways, I'll probably still wait or the sensibly priced, in-stock GTs. I'll probably get to beat Doom 3 by next summer...hopefully.
