I wanted to clear something up before it went too far. I found the cause of my cards insane heat readings. PNY forgot to install one of the 4 gpu heatsink mounting screws. There is a 1-2mm gap between the core and the sink. That also explains why the heatsink seems cool to the touch. I will contact PNY and complain thoroughly. If anyone else is experiencing high temps with the 6800 ultra, i recommend you check the heatsink and its hardware.

I don't have a screw with a spring on it like the others. If i was back home with my dad, i could easily have found a solution. I have no extra hardware here so i must rely on bitching pny out. All of this from a stupid screw.
 
Did you notice if they put any thermal compound between the core and heatsink? Obviously that much of a gap would make a HUGE difference in the cards heat problem. If these cards are sent from Nvidia and all the manufacturers simply slap a sticker on the hsf, then I would imagine that the problem stems from Nvidia, not PNY. Most of the 6800Us I've seen use the same exact HSF.
 
And that is the annoying part. I could easily install the screw if i had it. But, I can't since i don't have one to replace it with. This sucks. The card does perform quite well at stock...but hey, now i need a new one, or a new screw.
 
Man that sucks.. Well, if the card didn't burn out at those temps, then at least it shows that it's capable of running very hot if the situation ever arises again. Still, that's poor Q/A plain and simple.

When charging someone $500 for a component, I would expect a higher level of quality assurance.
 
I was actually on the phone cancelling my 6800 preorder from bestbuy when I read this thread. I hung up and decided to stick with it since BFG has excellent customer service, unlike PNY which I've used before. :(

good move...if anything from BFG is screwed...they will handle it quickly...non of this three week wait BS...now I just need to place my order sometime next week lOL
 
I can't wait to see my scores with the 6800U overclocked a bit more, and my FX running at 2.6ghz in 3dmark 01 and 03.

I would love to get into the top 20 just once, even though I don't put much into these benchmarks. It's just fun seeing the score go up with new hardware. lol

They are manufactured using the same reference design but they are not produced by nVidia. The third party manufacturer such as PNY constructs the PCB and actually puts the card togethor. nVidia just ships them out the cores.
 
Which leads all blame to PNY. They have some of the worst QC i have ever seen. I will never buy one of their products again. Every stick of ram i have ever used of theirs has died. I was kinda hoping that they could get a reference video card right...I guessed wrong. BFG, Gainward, or XFX will get my money from now on.
