Hey everyone. Just yesterday I started getting these weird graphical errors where I thought it was only in Half Life 2, but started occuring in my other games as well:

I have no idea what could be causing this.. I cleaned out dust and everything on the card and inside my comp and it's still no good. The fans seem to be working fine and all temperatures are normal. All I know is that this started happening almost a week after I swapped out my old dvd-rom drive with a new dvd writer one. Even when I put my old dvd-rom drive back in, the problem is still occuring so I'm thinking it's probably something else. I also tried updating the GeForce drivers (the "proper" method ) but still no good.

My system specs are:
P4 3.0ghz
1gig Ram
120gb HD
WindowsXP SP2
GeForce 6800 GT 256mb

Any help is appreciated!

I had an old GeForce 3 card that started doing that a few years ago. It died about 2 weeks later. If your card is still under warranty, might want to think about an RMA. Other than that, monitor your temps and make sure nothing's overheating.

My core gpu is at 53c. Mainboard is at 29c and CPU at 42c. Yeah I guess I can try RMA'ing it as last resort.

What are your temps at... and those "weird graphical errors" are called artifacts.
Is that what an artifact looks like? I have been having items like that in UT2004 for about six months on my eVGA 6800GT with a Zalman VF-700cu. I thought it was tearing produced by frame drop versus refresh rate. Load temperature on my card runs 60c-67c depending on room temperature (idle 40c-44c).

are you overclocking at all? have you tried different drivers? driver cleaner? but yeah, those are artifacts, if after making sure your card is running at stock speads, and you have properly cleaned and installed the drivers, if after all that it still happens, then your card has a problem, so i'd try an rma. when doom 3 came out, i had a bfg ti4200 oc that overheated at the stock speeds while playing doom 3, it made it so that shadows in all games had a "snow storm" in them, in other words, there were hundreds of white blocks (think static snow) in shadows. and they set up an rma for me no problem, but i never got to follow through with it because my jerkoff step brother decided to tear the cooler off of it, see what it looked like underneath, then chuck the card in the garbage, all while i was gone, and then pretend like nothing had happened.

Yeah everything is at stock and I'm not overclocking at all. I did run the drivercleaner and installed the latest drivers from nvidia's site..

No problem. Just go into the console and type "insertrandomtextureseverywhere_0" The default is 1.

If that doesn't work, my suspicion is a power problem. You say that the problem appeared after a hardware change (dvd burner). It may be that the new burner uses more power than the old, or when it was installed, you used a different power connector than before. Make sure the aux power connector to the video card is still connected, and that no other device uses power from that cable. Also, post the specs of your power supply, please.
