Geforce 6200A?!?

Anybody have any clues on the differences between the 6200A and the non A?

www.komplett.co.uk carry the A (128Mb AGP 8x for £55!) but the non A's seem a bit pricer so I'm guessing theres a memory difference or something

I have one eye'd up for an overclock and a half...
 
Don't worry about the "A". There are two kinds of 6200's: the PCI-Express ones which use the "turbo cache" and only have a small amount of video RAM, and the AGP versions which have 128MB or 256MB. The difference in price between the various AGP 6200's is because the cheap ones tend to have 64 bit wide RAM whereas the more expensive ones tend to have 128 bit wide RAM. (info on memory widths here) Avoid the 64 bitters - they're extremely slow. Avoid 256MB boards - a 6200 is too slow to take advantage of it. Pay the extra money and get a 128MB board with 128 bit memory.

EDIT: Booo found out the stats on that fighter, it's only a 64-bit'er....damn anybody know where a cheap 128bit one can be found?
 
The PNY 6200's you can find at any Comp USA or Fry's electronics should be a 128bit memory version of the card. So that would be about the best you can get with a 6200. Of course a BFG OC'ed version would be better, but I have yet to see one.
 
The 6200A is the new low cost AGP 6200, MSRP $79 in the US.

Look at the part number: "PVT44AWAH6". XFX uses the chip model in the name, so it's actually an AGP NV44... a 6200TC without the turbo cache features. The NV44 has 1/2 the fillrate of the NV43-based 6200 (2 ROPs vs 4 ROPs enabled in the NV43 6200), no color or z compression and a 64-bit local memory interface.

A Sparkle AGP 6200A is shown here: http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20050330PR208.html and notice that it also uses the same number in the name SP-AG44DH. Looks like NVIDIA made an AGP NV44, or there's a bridge under that large heatsink.
 
The difference between the 6200 and 6200a is due to the 'a' version being a new chipset. The 'a' uses the NV44a chipset, which is a newly released chipset that venders "forced" Nvidia to make. Basically, if you wanted a cheap AGP card and bought the 6200 is IS a PCI-E chip with a 'bridge' chip added to allow functionality over the AGP bus. This chip is ADDED to a reference design. Part count goes UP, while retail price (it's supposed to be a cheap card, after all) goes down. Net result = no profit margin.

Enter the NV44a. It is the 6200 with 'on die' bridge, meaning that it doesn't need an additional bridge chip. Lower parts count, lower manufacturing costs. Resonable margin when sold at retail.

Now, if only they'd start showing up on store shelves....

On the grounds of overclockability I think I'm gonna steer well clear of the A. Added transistors to the core usually means more heat and less of a decent OC.

it's a shame Fry's and CompUSA don't have stores in the uk :rolleyes:

You might want to hold off on 'steering well clear' until it's released. As you correctly stated, added transistors "usually" mean more heat/less OC. However, on the 6200a I'm not sure that is the case. ALL the 6200a's that I've seen are 'fanless', and have no additional power connectors. It "may" be a pretty good performer once it arrives.

Some of the nv43 based cards can be softmodded with RivaTuner into a 6600 giving you 8 pipelines instead of the stock 4 pipes. The new nv44 chips are locked and cannot be modded. Here's the one that I just ordered from newegg: http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=0-N82E16814122216
Apparently it has the nv43 core and it can be softmodded. I'll let you know my results when I get mine monday. I'm assuming that any 6200 agp that has the bridge chip is based on the nv43 and can be softmodded. Hopefully.....

The only way to KNOW for SURE that you are getting a 128-bit card is to buy the 256mb version.

What a lot of vendors do when making a budget card (virtually all of them, actually), is design a 256mb/128bit version. 8 memory 'pads' on the card, each with a 32mb memory module on it and a 16-bit pipe to it from the core. In order to make the cheaper cards, they just remove half the memory, so the card still had all 8 memory 'pads' on it with 16-bit pipes to the core, but only 4 of them have the 32mb memory modules on them. Net result? 128mb/64-bit.

Basically, any time you see a card with what looks like memory 'pads' on it without modules on them, you know it's a crippled card with half the memory bus width (in the case of a nominally 256-bit card, it means it's 128-bit instead; while in the case of a normally 128-bit card, it means it's 64-bit instead)
 
Thanks for the advise PGP, but with a non unlock-able core and 64-bit memory the 6200A is looking worse and worse. :(

For me, I'm not a gamer so it could work well. I just want a very nice card for DVD and HD playback on my home theater PC. Sounds like if you game, it would be wise to avoid (or at least get the one based on the NV43 chipset.

UPDATE
I got my leadtek 6200 today. It's has the nv43 core and I was able to unlock the extra pipelines. Nice speed boost! I have it clocked at 440core and 663mem. Just about doubles the performance in ut2k3 over the stock 6200!!!!! Best $125 i ever spent on a video card! :D
