GeForce 61X0 FSB Limit?

Ok, I have on hand a pair of GeForce and nForce 430 Motherboards, the foxconn 6150K8MA and a gigabyte K8N51GMF-9 and a fairly nice overclocking Opteron 165. One thing I'm noticing while looking for the maximum stable clock of the opteron is that the boards both fail to post and go into "safe mode" when the FSB goes over 275. I don't think 275 hits the limit of the Opteron and I've tred all HTT multipliers from 4 down. So just wondering what experiences other people may have had when trying to go over 275 on these.

Are you raising the VCORE (CPU voltage) on the Opteron? 2475MHz is high for stock volts.

Try the latest bios on the Foxconn and/or replacing the thermal compound under the north/south bridges. Every board I have seen has been able to post @ 275fsb (and that is about the limit). Mine will consistently post @ 275 and occasionally @ 285fsb. Wish I could raise the board voltage...

I am not sure what the highest fsb on the Gigabyte is, but I was under the impression it was not very high. Maybe I am just thinking of the problems people were having even posting with that board...

I'm pretty sure the opty can do 2.6 at stock volts so I don't think raising the vcore really helps. I am also using the latest foxconn bios and haven't tried replacing the thermal compounds yet so I will probably try that.

However, the "safe mode" message before when going over the magic 275 fsb on both boards is the thing that's really bothering me.

Personally, I would return the Gigabyte board straight away, because if you have not had any problems with it yet, it looks like you will soon. Plus, if you do need to raise the VCORE, it is not happening. I had to bump the volts for 2.6GHz on a 165 Opty so for me this would never have even been an option.

If changing the TC on the Foxconn does not work, see what it will post at. Also make sure to run a memory divider to confirm that the problem is with the board. You may have to settle for a lower overclock or a different board. I am contemplating moving back to the Biostar sitting next to me myself...
