I was wondering if anyone had had any luck with trying to hack the Gainward GeForce 5900 FX (256MB) to a 5950 Ultra.

Anyone tried this?

Read this first, it often DOESNt work and in fact often fries the card.
Expecting a 5900NP to run at 5950U speeds longterm without major cooling is asking for trouble.

not really true tho man...if your 5900nu STOCK will run higher than 5950 without the flash and will do so for long term use the 5950 flash shouldnt bother it one bit.

I flashed my Sparkle FX5900 nu with the Leadtek bios and it works fine, my card couldn't manage 475 but apparently the core-voltage in the 5950 BIOS is higher, now it does 475 without problems, the RAM settings at 950 works fine in games but on the desktop there are some artifacts, but I just 'underclock' it to 940 and it's fine but it not really a problem since I only use that computer for games.

I flashed by BFG 5900nu last night, and it worked perfectly. Very easy to do. 10 degrees temp drop on card, across the board, with flash.

One bit of info though, if you have a CPU OC going on, after flashing to a 5950, you may not be able to go much higher than the 475/950. That is what happened to me, after the flash, maxed out at 480/955. Previous to the 5950 flash, I could run 540/1000 perfectly stable in games. I played with the memory ratios and locked my AGP/PCI bus as 66/33 in the bios, then could OC my 59(50) to 505/956.

Your link shows a post of a guy that got a bum card, from a retailer that had a batch of bum cards. It has nothing to do with a 5950 flash not working. Most cards will successfully flash when done correctly.

My BFG 5900 Ultra flashed fine with the Leadtek bios. TV out works. I then tried the BFG 5950 Ultra bios from the link above and now TV out doesnt work.
Going back to Leadtek bios and the green/red screen.

I made a little toolkit to automate the backup of the current 5900 BIOS, flash it, and restore it if you have a bad flash. Check it out here.
