Ok, here is the deal.

Just got a new Alienware "Family" PC. I noticed through most of the gaming PC builder's sites that the 512MB Flavored Geforce 6800 Ultras are available. After doing VERY LITTLE research on them, I heard that because of power source reasons (on one specific model) they actually lower the memory clock/voltage. Most of the reviews show that they are comparable in most games that do not utilize the 512, which, at present, the only one I know of is Doom3 for Ultra High settings.

So, my question is, I got the card for the same price as a 256MB version. Would I be better off with the 256 or the 512? BTW: This is an SLI board, so I plan on getting a second card. Money is not an option for the other card, so I don't mind shelling out the $1k USD for another.

Also, I have heard that the AVALON UI in Longhorn is also a 512+ memory hog if you want the full effect. I know it is generations away, but does anyone think that SLI will be around long enough to even see Longhorn released? This is going to be my first SLI rig.

I heard the 512 version is slower couse the memory sucks. I would get 2 of the 256 version.

Why don't you wait a couple of weeks and get a G70 (next gen nvidia card) which will be as powerful it not more powerful than 2 6800Us in SLI. Then you can sell your 6800... or seeing as you have so much money to spend anyway, you could just give it to me for coming up with such a great idea! :D

I would sell the 512 version now and get the money out of it, buy something cheaper like a 6600GT to hold me over till G70s

You don't actually believe that it will be available in a couple of weeks, do you?

They might announce it in 2 weeks. But availablility probably won't be for months & months.

I can't wait for g70 in SLI!? ! muhahahauha

that's why I sold my 6800s and got a 6600gt until the g70s are out. the 6600gt will do fine until b/c my projector only does 1024X768 anyway.

Well ok maybe not in a couple of weeks, but still reasonably soon. I think both companies are going to try and have products available to buy soon after the launch unlike last time. I've heard from a different forum (overclockers.co.uk) which is also an online retailer that they will be for sale a week after the launch... Might just be rumours but the people who run the online shop are of course in the forum and should have reasonably accurate dates for those sorts of things.

Bear in mind that this is England I'm talking about here.

My friend bought the Asus 512mb 6800, but he does an ass of video editing/rendering......i dunno about the speeds tho eaither way it was a 700 dollar card for him 2-3 months ago, and thats his business at cost price at the time from his supplier :p

Any ideas how much the G70 would sell for immediately upon release?

Isnt MSRP 549.99 ? So I say Add 150.00 Markup to create a nice round number like 700.00 lol ... for the first 3 weeks.. :D

I don't know what they are actually going for retail, but based on the numbers I have seen on the builder's sites, they ranged around 850-985USD. 1k is close enough for me.

I have already purchased the rig, so waiting it out is not an option. Selling or WTT Thread may be.
