Greetings everybody,
I put my eyes on a GeCube X800XT Platinum Edition, has anybody seen/tryed one of these? I mean is its performance as good as that of other x800xt pe's?
I want to replace my PNY 6800 ultra with this card will it worth it ?(the 9800 pro I had before I got the 6800 Ultra had a better image quality...one of the reasons I'm going back to Ati)
Thank you in advance.

Unless you're making a profit or at the very least breaking even with the trade, I'd say it isn't worth your time. Try a new driver set on the Ultra - it might solve whatever image quality problem you're having. 66.71s work great for me, and you can check out that thread that compared performance between all the drivers in 3DMark05 to guide you to the good ones.

Actually there is a 10E sum that I have to get back after I turn this card in, I'm not talking about that kind of image quality...I'm talking about the bright colours, gama, brightness( there are no artefacts or other kind of issues like these), for me the quality of the 6800 ultra(both performance and image quality) is off-balanced.
I'd rather lose 5-10 fps in Doom 3 and Farcry (which sucks btw), and have a better and clearer image in all other applications/games.

Hey this is off topic but what games do you PvP in? I'm guessing MMORPG since thats where the term really applies. I play Asherons Call (darktide) if ya ever want to duel me. :) Name is Mortal Fear if you are interested.

Well the only MMORG in my book is WoW, but since it hasn't been launched I'm gonna have to wait on that one.
I need an advice soon because I'm gonna have to do the swich between cards today or tommorow.

I don't understand the point? Why not just adjust the settings to fit your liking?

PvP, where are u from?

If you plan to upgrade within six months or one year, get yourself the x800 xt pe. If you don't, you'll want to keep the 6800 Ultra, which seems more future proof. IMHO. I don't know much about Gecube, other than they changed their name from Gigacube to Gecube. Some said they were a Gigabyte division, but I heard they specifically changed their name from Gigacube to Gecube to avoid any confusion between them and Gigabyte. AFAIK, Gecube is a brand-name of InfoTek Taiwan.

Replacing a 6800U with a x800xtpe would be a bad idea. The 6800U is just as fast and is way more future proof. 6800U is faster in CS:S, faster in Doom3, and is just as fast in FarCry with more special effects to boot (HDR). I really don't see why you'd consider the x800. As more games come out with SM3.0 and OpenEXR the margin of performance and image quality will grow larger and larger between the 6800U and x800xtpe in Nvidia's favor.

(man, especially after you got the 6800U working, too geez!)

My XT-PE is faster in Far Cry than my 6800GT @ Ultra was...plain and simple. Doom3, no noticeable difference.....

Which is the same conclusion I came to when I traded my 6800GT for an XT-PE.....sure the Ultra might be 20fps faster in Doom3 or w/e (just threw the number out there) but with my overclocked system I'm still gonna be WELL over 60fps average with the XT, so in MY case it doesn't really matter. Same principle applys in Far Cry and HL2...just trying to be realistic. I'm not arbitrarily going to take one card over another just because its technically faster...when i can't tell the difference.....not when the "slower" card is gonna give me more overclocking headroom and satisfy my benchmark whore "practices" to boot. ;)

Damn I'm really not sure what to do :(, should I keep the Pny 6800 Ultra or not, I can swich it for the x800-xt pe even tommorow.

Get the PE, its a better card.

Ya, the GT may be faster than the pro, but the XT is cleary better than the ultra.
I don't think anyone keeps their videocard long enough to worry about being "futureproof".
You buy a videocard to play the games that are out now, or coming soon, some some game 2 years away!

Ok guys I'm 80% convinced on getting the x800xt pe, mostly because untill there will be enough games that support sm3, the raw power of the 6800 ultra will be so low that everybody will need newer cards( ah and btw Farcry as an argument is=0 imho, sucky game), Thanks again.

Dude don't do it, it's not worth it..

He's right, in most cases, except....

1) you have a specific complaint about the 6800GT that the XT-PE can remedy. I did, I play a ton of online Far Cry and the XT-PE is clearly faster in that respect. No more st...st...st...st...stutter and higher IQ settings than the 6800GT could handle..

2) you just have money burning a hole in your pocket.

3) you want the better card (of course, an opinion).

4) there is no "future proof" video card.

There is no "bad" card between an XT-PE or a 6800GT/Ultra. It all depends on YOU and what YOU are going to do with it. If you are happy, fuck anyone elses opinions. It's your $$$. :p

I'd get the x800xt.....but I'm only saying that because I like ATi and I hate huge computer components(hell, I don't even like 3.5" hard drives:D)

Well everyone has their own, unique reasons I guess. :p

The store I bought my 6800 ultra from offered me the chance to return it for an x800xt pe(without any charge...something like eye for an eye). But due to lots and lots of thinking I ended up with my initial pick I'm staying with 6800 ultra.Thank you guys for your opinons, tips and advices.

Good stuff, I'm not going to say anything like "Why didn't you do it" or something...because it's none of my business. What matters most is that you made a decision and you're happy with your card...so congrats. :)

Thanks a lot dude Take care ! ;)

I would have done it.. Well i did do it.. Was the best move i ever made. The Xt is a great card. There are more game to play out there than just farcry and doom 3. I couldn't stand all of that sturtering.

Man everybody has an opinion, but even you have to admit the 6800 ultra is more future-proof (like all nVidia based cards).

Future proof on the Ultra is meaningless given its poor performance with its new features (openexr) or negligible gains (sm 3.0). But long as you're happy thats what counts.

Acually I think its not the fault of the 6800 ultra but that of the game programmers. I mean come on you can't just add full support through just a patch, Farcry hasn't been written for this technology.

IMO, I'd get the XT PE. Amazing Card and great image quality. No SM3, but no games even have it yet.

I can actually speak from experience now and back this guy up.....I love my XT-PE, sooo much more then my GT @ 450/1300 believe it or not, the XT-PE is still benching and playing nicer at 560/1240 then the GT was at those clocks.

The x800XT is better for all games, except Doom3, plain and simple. Also clearly shows better IQ.

x800XT>6800U

While I do more or less agree with you, that was a really bad way to say that. You'll learn quite fast that around here it takes next to nothing to acquire the label of !!!!!!, and if you want to be taken seriously i suggest giving more then a single sentence explanation as to WHY you're so in favor of one card or another.

Thx for the support though. ;)

quoted for smarts and truth :)

best card for farcry - 6800U (hdr effects)
best card for Counterstrike:Source - 6800U (best performance)
best card for Doom3 - 6800U (best performance)
best card for Painkiller:BOOH - 6800U (SM3.0 + hdr effects)
best card for Half Life 2: nobody knows
best card for Call of Duty: 6800U (best performance and supersampling)
best card for LOTR Battle of Middle Earth: 6800U (SM3.0 + GI)

a 5-10% gain in fps in a a D3D game here and there is not worth losing the future proof sm3.0 and openexr HDR eye candy of the 6800, not to mention a loss in OpenGL performance & Doom3 engine games. It's like saying buying a Voodoo3 is better than a TNT2 because the Voodoo3 can run 16bit color a bit faster than the TNT2 can run 32bit color and not many games have 32bit color yet; but after a few months it was obvious the TNT2 was the better buy. No game has fully taken advantage of SM3.0, and according to Richard Huddy of ATI, when they do its going to make the X800 series "hurt" according to him. (soruce: Save the Nanosecond leaked internal powerpoint presentation) In addition, developers of Unreal3 have stated that FP24 cards such as the X800 will have precision errors & hence visual artifacting when rendering fog shaders in U3, while FP32 cards like the 6800 will not.

It's also humorous people saying 6800 is too slow to run sm3.0 when a game that did a two-week patch conversion (FarCry) to sm3.0 yielded 5-20% performance gains with it depending on the map. Same goes for OpenEXR HDR, which runs fine in 1024x768 or 1280x1024 if you set it up properly (61 series or 70 series drivers as 66.xx has hitching and framerate probs with 1.3 patch, r_hdrrendering 2 instead of 7 if necessary), depending on your system - and thats with a beta implementation. Fact is, the 6800 *is* more future proof and the features are usable. The people who say otherwise are the people who don't own a 6800, and the reason is obvious - because they spent $500+ on a card that is already being outdated featurewise in today's games, incredible eyecandy they don't even have the option of using. ATI's marketing spin is in full effect because they know they are behind and need to discredit the competition until they can get their own similar solution out. The most recent example of this is SLI, which ATI derided for months and now sure enough they are coming out with an SLI setup.

Meanwhile, 6800 owners, like 9700PRO owners of the past who had SM2.0 before it was widely used in games, will have the option to skip next generation as their card already has the features of next-gen games, while X800 owners will be compelled to upgrade to gain these features. 'nuff said.

To an extent yes, but some of us are in slightly different situations and you can't say that the 6800 WOULD be a better card for me....not with a highly overclocked XT-PE. Out of the box I respect what you're saying.....but not everyone is in the same boat, and you have to take that into consideration.

"We" may be compelled to upgrade for newer features, but again...some won't worry, as a lot of us enthusiasts will be coming up on teh time when we'd be buying a new card ANYways....so I really couldn't care less. :p

There is no such thing as future proof. There is no such thing as future proof. There is no such thing as future proof. Maybe if you read it enough you can understand that.

For every site that shows the 6800U faster in Far Cry, I can find one that shows the XT-PE faster. Like this one http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/far_cry_1.3/page7.asp

On my own rig, my XT-PE IS faster than the 6800GT @400/1100, there is no "if" about it. I play a whole two steps higher res with it at higher IQ settings and still get better average framerates than my GT did.

In Doom3 the GT was a bit faster, but not night and day, and in fact, my LOWEST framerates are no lower with the ATI card than the GT. Yes, the GT would hit higher peaks, but so what, my AVERAGE framerate is more consistent. Not to mention the st...st...st..st...stutter in the NV card that some people have and cannot get rid of.

SM3.0 will be great....one day. But not alot of difference at this point and there is no IQ boost over ATI's implementation of 2.0b.
HDR, same thing, it is great looking (sometimes) but most people DO NOT want to sacrifice 50% of the framerate AND turn off AA to do it...by the time I and current games NEED it, I will buy a new card anyways, regardless of brand. I prefer the antialiasing and high resolutions rather than jaggies and glowing lights. Just MY preference.

trancendz, you are starting to appear a bit....fan-boi-sh. You are one of the biggest anti-ATI posters around here. And don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about, I HAD a 6800GT and while it was a great card, I like my XT-PE more. Have YOU owned an XT-PE and played Far Cry and Doom3 with it?

No it isn't the best card for CSS nor FC since you have to SWAP OUT DRIVERS to get ideal performance from either game. Until nVidia can give solid performance/quality with a single driver set for both those games, 6800 is behind the curve. You see, what Tranny isn't telling you guys is 66.81 is required for 6800 to SLIGHTLY pull ahead of the X800 cards in CS:S but it has bugs in Far Cry when using OpenEXR. So in order to enjoy Far Cry with EXR, you have to revert to 66.71 drivers and then you lose performance in CS:S. Not to mention in Pain Killer 6800s have a bad shimmering problem (as they do in a lot of other games--do a search on a thread about it) and they run the game slower than an x800 xt. HL2 is going to be ATi's so the only thing the 6800 is left with is Doom 3 and COD for speed, thats it.

SM 3.0 and OpenEXR is completely useless on the 6800 cards right now, OpenEXR shows a huge penalty (more than 50%in a lot of cases) and does not let you use AA. Right now all those feature serve to do for a 6800 card is simply PR checkmarking, thats it. When either feature becomes heavily used, 6800 cards will be far too slow to make good use of them--hell they're too slow to run OpenEXR today.

Very nice documented comment you made right there, while most of the posters go like : "get ... card because I like it (My dog likes the box of ... card)", you proved you have some backup for your words.
I guess the future will prove who is wrong and who is right until then you can't go wrong with either of the cards.

I got rid of my 6800 Pro in favor of an X800 Pro for the very same reasons that the thread starter doesn't seem to like his 6800. nVidia seems to be using the very same damn 2D engine and RFI design as they have been ever since the TNT. Poor and muddy 2D clarity coupled with lacklustre 2D performance - very noticable when scrolling through webpages in FireFox or doing various things in Photoshop.

I was soooo glad to go back to an ATI card for those reasons... nVidia needs to spend some time reworking it's outdated 2D engine.

Wow that was stupid (in case your 6800 pro=6800 ultra), I mean the 6800 ultra>6800 gt>x800pro...and yes I agree Ati>nVidia in image quality but that's about all.
