So, my sister needed a new computer, and my old boxen (Duron 1.0Ghz, 512MB RAM) is better than her older boxen, so I put a couple old hard drives (30GB, 15GB) in there, a CD-ROM and a USB 2.0 card and gave it away.

Course, I made her promise to run it 24/7 and to let it run Folding@Home. My output will be down a bit since she'll actually be using the computer, but overall, a net gain since my sister gets a computer, my power bill goes down a bit, and the computer is still folding.
 
That's a net plus in my estimation. See, now you will have an uncontrollable urge to fill the "void in your life" caused by giving the old machine away. And last I checked, it was hard to build yourself a new system that was slower than about 1.5 GHz. See it will all work out for the better in the end. Trust us, we know about what we speak. ;) :D
