Gateway Profile lcd problem

I found this gateway profile 1.8 part number 3500705 in some storaged garage. It works, but the lcd monitor doesn't. After turning on the computer I see nothing but a tan screen. I don't even see a boot screen, a windows 98 splash screen, or anything. The monitor never shows any more then a solid tan picture with no evidence of movement from boot to fully loaded windows 98, so I know drivers are not in question.
I am not sure whether it be the video card or the monitor itself. However, I can hook another monitor to the vga output and the computer seems to run fine, except the lcd screen.
I don't have a psu for this computer, but I have tried a Dell 20v 3.5 amp power supply and a HP 18.5v 6.5 amp power supply with the Profile pc both had same results. The computer requires a 19v 4.5 amp psu. Could this power supply be the problem? The computer portion works perfectly from both same power supplys, the monitor is the only part in question.
I doubt gateway will be willing to help.
I guess the main question is: Are lcd displays extremely picky about it's power source? The power supplies I tried are pretty close.
