Gateway mp8708 problems

I purchased a gateway mp8708 from a friend recently knowing it had some hardware problems. The problem that has me scratching my head is the issue that the computer can run off the power adapter, but unplug it and leave it to run off the battery, it goes dead. So I don't know if it's the battery that has the problem or the laptop not charging the battery. Does anyone have any good ideas to try and figure out this problem. One option for me to try is to find an identical laptop and try this battery in that computer, but until I find one, I need to try other options.

bring up the battery meter and see what it says. after that then i would try testing a known good battery like you said.

Long story short, see if your battery is part of a recall by Gateway and you can get it replaced for free. Go to www.gateway.com/battery. I am doing that now and hopefully that will solve my problem. I will let you know when I receive the replacement. Here is the rest of my story....

I have the Gateway MP8708 laptop also for 1 year and 1 month (bought at Best Buy). Just the other night, I was watching a DVD on my laptop and my dog knocked the laptop off a bed onto the floor. It was running on battery power at the time and when I picked it up, the laptop was off and would not turn back on. Then I plugged in the AC adapter and it powered up fine.

It is weird because windows XP under Control Panel - Power Options - Power Meter will recognize when the battery is in as well as show that it is 99% charged. But pulling the AC adapter out when windows is on will result in total power loss (wont switch to battery). Also, the light on the front of the laptop will show that battery is either charging (red light) or fully charged (blue light) when AC adapter is plugged in. Also, led lights on battery show 100% charged when test button is pressed.

If not the battery, then I think the only other possibility is that the drop damaged something on the motherboard and I would have to replace the motherboard to fix it. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It wasn't a dog that broke this laptop, it was the previous owner, fed up with not being able to get a connection with the wireless, he vented the only way he knew how, with his fist at the lcd. That's the only problem I thought I was going to have, but then he tells me, 'oh yea, the comp wont work without the battery' after I already paid him partially. A simple fix turned into a dragged out headache.

I checked the battery, Gateway says there's no need to cover it. I'm going to try and get one on ebay and hope that's the solution. I might just part it afterwards and if the motherboard proves to be ok, may have one available for you.

One question though, you say your charging led is red. When I have it plugged in with the battery, I get more of a purplish, is that the one you are referring to?

yeah.. it is more purple than red when charging. Good luck. Hopefully batteries will fix these problems though my hunch is that they wont.
