Sup everyone. I went to best buy yesterday and they just released the M-6850 FX. It's a 15.4" version of the 6860, but instead of the 8800M GTS, it has a HD2600 XT for the video card. The laptop's so new that it's not even on their website yet. Does anyone have this laptop and if you do, what do you think about it? I'm looking to get a laptop for portable gaming, and the 6860 FX would be a great one to get, but it's a lil bulky and I don't like how the battery sticks out the back. I'm gonna be playing mainly Age of Conan on it. If I remember correctly, the price is 1099.99 for the 6850.

Found the specs for it on the gateway website:

The 2600 isn't a particularly good card, and an 8600GT/9500M GS will outperform it. There are definitely better deals available in that price range than the 6850. Take a look at the Dell Vostros, or even some ASUS models that you can find on Newegg which would be around the same price but with better specs and build quality.

I did more researching and I think I like the 6860, even though the battery sticks out and it's kinda bulky. Those are minor compared to the price/performance ratio it has. Might go back to Best Buy and holler at one, lol.

I am going to Best Buy this week to pick up my 6860 FX. I have got to say, when compared to other 17" notebooks it is not that big (bulk-wise).

Unless something else comes up I'm planning on picking up a 6860FX next time it comes on sale. I checked in the store and they couldn't see any sales coming up. Patience is one of my strong points as indicated by my sig box.

Did you even read this post or what?

What do you mean? The OP saw the 6850 and was asking whether or not it's a decent smaller alternative to the 17" 6860, and in my post I explained that it isn't a particularly powerful or high-quality notebook compared to others in its price range, and that he would be better off getting a 15" laptop from a better manufacturer or putting up with the added bulkiness of the 6860. Explain to me why you would think that I didn't read it.

I'd rather have the battery stick out and have it protect the power plug header from being knocked loose from the motherboard (pretty popular with Gateways apparently) than to have the battery be flush with the back. That was the best excuse I could come up with why the battery sticks out, and I'm sticking with it.

Well I am by no means a staunch supporter of Gateway products in fact quite the opposite.

However I too have seen the 15 and 17 inch fx notebooks at best buy and have to say compared to the rest it's quite a good deal of performance in a package thats pretty decent though a bit flashy and an excellent keyboard and lcd.

It got good remarks at Anandtech which made me take a second look at it. The dells cannot touch it at least not the ones best buy has..

I would also say the toshibas do have some good options especially at toshibadirect.com for some of their models which also pack alot more punch for the price compared to dell, hp and ibm and sony for that matter.

I would put the gateway fx system on my short list for sure.

well, I just got a 6860 last month after a week of checking, and people on [H] praising it so much... I love this machine. it does everything I ask of it and more, I do dvd to Ipod and PSP faster than I have ever been able to do it.. t5550 1.83 G Proc. 4 Gigs of RAM, and games are killer on here. and the 17" screen is beautiful... the only thing Im gooing to do it buy a new proc this holiday. but I was thinking of the X9xxx series instead of the t9300 or 8300's anybody have any info on these? and for the battery hanging off the back! I have no problems with it. but I do make sure I take it off before I travel with it. and it does save the plug in becuse the both stick out excactly the same distance.
