I am in the market for a small computer to operate a Point of Sale system for my Hobby Store. In the process I stumbled across the Gateway SX computers. It seems like it would fit the bill and gets good reviews.

I was the Gateway web site yesterday looking at the configurations before I make my decision. I went back today and when I clicked the View Available models button, it states that the SX series had been discountinued.... So I hunted around the website and it appears that all of their desktops and laptops have been discountinued.

Any insight? I tried searching the web and can't find any information.... Maby it is just an error on their web site, but based on their rough past I guess i guess they could be dead...

Actually, you don't see any "in-production" models on that site because the company is in the middle of a model-year change. Consumer electronics companies typically replace large parts of lines or entire lines during the Spring of each year. All of the lines that you saw there were all last year's models.

Yeah, I am aware of that.... All of the systems on their web site show as being "Unavalable- Discountinued"... I only visited their site to get specs. Interesting...

Also, now that Gateway is part of the Acer group, it no longer sells systems factory-direct. Instead, you can now only buy a Gateway-branded PC pre-built - and at select retailers.

Serious?

Damn, first I've heard.

edit: happened in 2007, guess I'm out of the loop :p

I just heard about it too. I bought my gateway netbook, and there was a big acer sticker on it and acer OEM sticker on the bottom..

The standard laptop boxes tend to be a generic Acer/Gateway/E-Machines one as well. Just your standard cost cutting things.

Remember when it was Gateway2000? Those were some badass machines, right up there with ZEOS, Micron and Dell...ZEOS Pantera 90...'nuff said

Sure do. My dads first company originally went with all Gateway 2000 computers.

Had tons of the damn things.

Great machine's for the time. That was our first family computer. My Dad had a dos box he used for work but that doesn't really count. It was when I first started getting into computers.

My dad used that computer for like 16 years. He finally retired it last year. LOL. We still have it and I've been debating on using the case for a mod project.

Yes they are dropping fast. You can check their stock and be shocked. They are looking for a buyer, just like Palm. ;)

My old Gateway P90 is still playing old DOS and Win 95 games after 16 years, still as good today as it was in 94. They were great in their day, miss old Ted Waitt and the cow boxes..
