I'm picking up a Gateway 7422GZ this week for $1400 bucks. I've looked at the competition and the service ratings and I'm pretty convinced that this is the best bang for the buck. Just wondering if anyone has anything that might dissuade me from making the purchase.

Specs: (this was basically the eMachines 6811 upgraded)

It has some very good specs

I would go for a 3 year warenty though

what are you repolaceing it with and what do you intend to use it the most for?

The 7410 is a great buy, but by the time I tweaked it out to match the 7422, I would be at least back to the same price and I really hate big MIRs....makes me nervous :p

This is my first privately owned notebook, we have Dells at work, so this one is just mine and plan to use it for all round usage, nothing user specific, so the specs are good for me. I am definitely going with the ESP and the accident policy. :)

Its a nicely configured system

the only thing I see that is a minor letdown is the 9550 card
it has a higher power rateing than the 9600/9700 (less battery life)
and it often has only a single 64bit memory bus.

the other thing was it doesn't say if its a 4.2k or 5.4k 80gb HD
i would check to make sure your getting the 5.4k

I've got one of these, and that 9550 isn't all that bad. You just have to load the Omega Cat's and it shows up as a mobile 9600/9700 with the same clocks as the 9600. The hard drive is a shade on the slow side, but its nothing a defragging once in a while doesn't fix.

The HDD is unfortunately a 4200 and that is all that is offered at this point but it's nothing that a future upgrade can't cure. I will wait until they come out with a higher capacity 7200 to upgrade. That should be a big performance boost right there. :)

Bang for the buck-wise you can't go wrong with it. It definitely makes an eventual hard drive upgrade that much more palatable. It does have a hitch when it comes to battery life though. It seems that if you boot from battery the cpu will throttle correctly, but if you boot from a/c it stays full throttle the entire time its on. Thats when you get the whopping hour of battery life.

I got this for $1499 2 weeks ago and I can say I am very happy with it. The screen is beatiful (no dead pixels) and everything works perfectly.

If you plan to uninstall xphome and replace it with xp pro you should visit www.notebookforums.com and grab all the drivers. Also go to amd.com for the cpu patch things or it will be constantly running at 800mghz to save battery.

Would you hapen to have the URL for that patch. I have run into this problem on my sister's 6811 and would like to eliminate it ASAP. I can get hers back to speed, but it requires a reboot every time.
