Though most people are skeptical that Bill Gates will step away from Microsoft altogether, the company’s head honcho has reaffirmed his plans to step away next year as planned.

"I am in a lucky situation of having way more things that seem interesting to do and very exciting and important, and working with smart people, and highly impactful, way more than a 24-hour day will fit," Gates said. To be sure, there is widespread skepticism in the industry about the possibility of Gates genuinely disengaging.

What will this really change? Ballmer is still there and he's wack.

Gates has been moving away for a while now. This doesn't surprise me that he will completley disconnect himself from Microsoft, it's not like he needs anymore money or has any desire to gain more.

Good for Bill. Step back, let someone else mess with the company, and just keep the foundation going. He's had a good run at it.

Lord knows he has enough money, but he may be one of those people who just can't stay away from the limelight, like some athletes who've made millions but hang around way past their prime because they crave the fame and attention.

maybe, but the people who crave huge attention generally dont donate billions to a non-profit foundation trying to benefit humanity

Somehow, I find it hard to believe that he really has that much impact on what goes on in Microsoft software these days anyway. I mean, I can't see him sitting and writing code anymore, or going through lists of features or any of the day-day stuff in the life developing software. But I could be wrong...

He did however give directions for the software. We all know he had much to say about Vista. Programming lines of code is not the only way someone can have an impact. Personally I think MS would be best serve if Ballmer AND Bill would leave so this company could refactor itself into a sharper more agile company.

Actually Gates was very hands on during the process of the XBox360, and that stupid looking coffee table PC, also that Microsoft control house that TECHTV used to show all the time.

Gates did say that once the coffee table PC became a reality he would retire and keep hiding his billions from the federal estate tax (Ummm I mean donate his billions to the charity he set up because he is a very generous man.) through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation..

That seems a little bit cold. Who cares why he donates money? It's not like he can touch it after he donates it anyway, so he's not profiting much from it.

I think he will step down. I do think he used to beleive that Microsoft could really rule the world and completely dominate the PC markets. And, in a lot of respects, they have. But, I think he changed a lot after he had kids. Once they are there, money, power, and world control probably aren't as important as they used to be. Plus, he's getting older. Why should he care what happens now?

I wonder if this is a good move for Microsoft?

Like a few others have said, he is not as active as he once was, while he still gets involved in certain projects. Many of those are out the door live, or going to be there soon. He probably has been not doing much other than his current projects, and letting whoever is replacing him take over the new/upcoming projects.

Good way to let transition change hands, instead of doing a quick in & out type move, where you are left with a new guy in charge of everything from old to new.
