Ok, here's the deal. I need to start wearing some sort of headphones so my wife can sleep while I frag away in BF2. The problems I have are:

1. I can't stand most over the head headphones. The padding/crap they put on them ends up rubbing me the wrong way.

2. I have a large noggin, so most of the behind the neck type pinch my head too hard to be comfortable.

So, anyone know of any good behind the ear/earbuds or over head that might suit me? Looking in the around $80 range.

I wouldnt use earbuds. The sound will suck, and your wife will still hear it (trust me - I know :rolleyes: ). You need a nice over-the-head (padded) set. Good sound, low bleed-through. I dont have a brand reccomendation though.
 
the Beyerdynamic DT231 might be right up your alley for the price(60$).
Another one that a lot of people recommend, but I'm not too crazy about, is the Sennheiser HD280pro.

I've have no experience with the DT231, but from the reviews it seems to be good for the price. The HD280pro I have used for a while, and it does some things good, and others not soo good.

If you want comfrot in headphones though, strive to get the ones with the comfy velour ear pads.

The Sennheiser PC150 and PC160 are pretty good. I have the PC150s. They can be had for $35. I too have a wide head, and the PC150s are comfy. They have about 3/4" padding inbetween your head and the headband. You should try them out.
 
How about some IEMs? The Sharp MD-33 (audiocubes.com) has great bass and a very good soundstage for an IEM. You could also get a pair of Shure e2c for around your pricerange.
 
I can't think of anybody that games with IEMs. Besides long usage of IEMs can get very uncomfortable for some people. Another thing is the isolation. What if some one needs to call you or something? With the sound of explosions you won't be able to hear the phone. or voices.
 
Hubby and I both have Sennheiser PX100's. They are very lightweight and easy on the head/ears. Sound quality is excellent. Hubby games for hours on end with his, I just use mine to listen to music. ~$40.

Edit, the headphone cords are pretty short, we both use extensions.
 
I have a set of Sony's similar to these: link and LOVE them.. .they sound great and are super comfortable for extended timeframes..

I also HATE those big bulky ones that remind me of the ones my dad used to have about 25 years ago.. I see people walking around with mp3 players and headphones as big as cereal bowls like these:

I think I had that Koss headset, and it broke the second day of ownership.... I dunno what went wrong. May have been just a bad set.

If I have headphones on, its for only one of two reasons:
1. To not disturb the wife.
2. To be engrossed in the gameplay WITHOUT distractions.

Number 2 being the real "number 1".

Comfort, is in the sense of the beholder.
I find some of the big headphones to be the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. My old Sennheiser HD590 V3's were by far, the most comfortable headphones I have ever used (super light, super soft velour, open, and very little pressure).

You are right though, big headphones can nock your "coolness" factor down in the eye of the general public, but I think they are nifty (just a few weeks ago someone in my class was using grado SR60/80 headphones with his portable MP3 player ^_^, almost brought a tear to my eye.)
 
Just go easy on the volume/bass gain. My pair of big comfy headphones has a rattling voicecoil from too much bass/gunfire going on in games. Burnt that baby out in no time.

But most of you arnt making yourself deaf from pumping watts through their headphones...

Lol my bastard friend let me try his 650's...now it's impossible to settle for anything less.

If you don't wanna spend >$300, don't try the 650...it'll set the standard too high lol.
*Unfortunately, the 650 is open, so it's not even an option anyway.

Regarding the Sony's...I got what I would call a very good pair, and for almost nothing.

The Sony MDR-V6 or 7506. The V6 does NOT equal the V600. Too many newbs dismiss the Sony series when they've listened to junk, when quality phones can be had for <$70. In fact, since mine are refurbs, they were less than $49.
 
Big = reduced coolness factor? Hah! These old Koss sound pretty cool to me. :D
The best part is they have volume knobs for each side. Which may not be important
for most but I have special requirements.
Which is why they are always on my head while gaming.

Must admit that I can certainly understand why some would perfer to use the speakers for
surround effects.
 
Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I have more than a few options.

BTW, I could care less about the "coolness factor" They could look like a propeller beanie for all I care since my wife is the only one who will see me. I tried a pair of Sennheiser's DJ series and although they sounded great the pad on the top band just ended up being way too irritating. Plus the leather(ish) pads just got too hot.

yea, that's a very common thing about the fake leather ear pads. That's why I recommend the comfy velour. They are soft, dry, don't get very hot, and "usually" provide more padding then the fake leather ones. Of course, there are other materials, like the synthetic stuff found in the AKG 501's, but that's not too comon among the sub 80$ stuff(or any for that matter).

I'm not sure if i said this before, but as always, try to see them in person, see how they feel, and how they sound. That's the best way, hands on research ^_^.
