I am currently using a DGL-4500 and have been having a lot of problems regardless of firmware.

Everytime I want to host a CoD 4 dedicated server I have to restart the router and occasionally put the server rig in DMZ. I can take it right out of DMZ and everything still works.

I also cannot host an Unreal Tournament 3 server but if what I have googled is correct, I need a router with full cone nat.

Most of the stuff in my home is connected via ethernet, not wireless. The only devices we use wirelessly are our iPhone 4's, Wii, a computer in the back bedroom and guest computers (when friends come over).

What I really need more than anything is a reliable and good router primarily for wired. That said, not much emphasis is put into reviewing wired routing features anymore.

Any opinions on a good router to go with? I was thinking about the WNDR3700 and an additional D-Link 8 port switch. My two main computers hooked directly to the router and then everything else connected to the switch.

I know it may not be the smartest thing to do but maybe just hook the main rigs to the switch and anytime I want to host a server just go straight from the switch. Oh maybe, keep the switch primary and forget buying another router altogether. Just use the current DGL-4500 for broadcasting wireless go and the switch for everything else.

If a hacker wants to get in, they will get in regardless. So a decent firewall (Norton) + a switch should be ok or not?

Buy a cheap old PC off craigslist / buy a Firebox X700 of eBay and throw pfSense on it. If you don't want to spend that much a WRT310n (Rev1) with DD-WRT on it worked fine before I got my pfSense box.
 
Yeah, don't want to spend that much.

I hadn't heard of that open source firmware till you posted. I will look more into it. Too bad my current routers aren't capable of using it.
