Looking for advice for a friend's new rig, how are these parts/specs?
  1. Crucial BX100 500gB (SSD)
  2. 212 EVO (Heatsink)
  3. G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) Intel Z170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231877
He already has a GTX 970, and Corsair 750w. I know sleep states may have to be changed in order to use that PSU.

Do games currently, or are games likely to within a couple of years, start gaining much benefit from hyper-threaded CPUs? If not, there's no need for the 6700.

CPU/RAM/MOBO here:

That combo isn't worth the money. You're just saving $15 off the deal, but you could save a LOT more going with a different 2x8GB kit. They're in the $90 - $100 range which is already $25+ cheaper than the RAM in that combo. $145 for that motherboard is probably overkill/not needed for you're friends purpose, but I don't know what he needs so I can't really recommend anything else, but I do know that most solid motherboard are a good $20 - $30 cheaper or more. If it's for gaming then you could easily get by with a solid $100 board.

Games do not take enough advantage of HT to make up for the price difference. HT has been around for over a decade now and I don't foresee that changing in the near future. However, if you do a lot of multitasking (such as gaming + streaming) then HT might help a little with that. Although you'd be better off with a streaming program that takes advantage of GPU hardware acceleration to offload the load onto the GPU and not the CPU.

How old is that PSU? Do note that PSUs tend to degrade at an alarming rate after roughly 5 years no matter how well they are built.
