Hi, I have been planing on building a HTPC/ gaming rig. I have been reading the forums and i it seems like its geared towards people who want to have an HTPC without the cost of a gaming rig. So, if i did build a badass gaming rig with an tuner card is there anything I should keep in mind if i also want to use it as a HTPC? I want to be able to play blu-ray movies in HD, set it up as a PVR/ main TV for use with sage TV.

I'm with you. I finished up my gaming rig not too long ago and have it hooked up to my 1080P 65" DLP TV. Being a broke college kid, I don't have cable, so I figured why not throw a tuner card in it and get a few HD stations.

As far as tuners, I've read you should stay away from PCI cards because of...PQI error I think it was? Something about an error when data is being written to the PCI BUS while the tuner is going. I'm planning on going w/ a PCI-Ex1 card myself

Off topic...but FYI "broke college kid"=roommates don't want to throw in for cable, and I'm not going to pay the monthly bill myself if everybody's gonna use it. I know it probably sounds weird saying I'm too broke to get cable yet I've got a 65" DLP, lol

The Hauppauge HVR-1800 is probably what I would get if I were in the market right now. I've never had a problem with Hauppauge cards, and it's capable of ATSC and QAM if/when you decide to get cable.

Stay far away from any of the Pinnacle cards. They may be tempting because of the price but believe me, they don't work half as well as they're supposed to. I'm stuck with their HDTV PCI card right now and the last drivers Pinnacle released were betas in October '07. Piece of junk.

lol that is true ;)

i'm not sure what ota tuner to get myself. i know i want one though

i have the Hauppauge HVR-1600 good card, crappy software. the 1800 is just the pci-x version. Used it with sage before i just used wmc.

If recent news is to be believed, you may be getting a much better signal if you stick to OTA HD rather than the HD you get from the cableco.

As for adding HTPC functionality to a gaming PC, I can only add that you may want to choose the other hardware carefully. Typically, you want a HTPC to be quiet, if not silent. So make sure that the video card and the CPU HSF aren't screamers.
