Which is better in your opinion. 1024x768 4xAA 8xAF -OR- 1280x1024 2xAA 8xAF? Which would run faster / look better?

Why don't you try it and see which *you* prefer?

Personally, even when I can I tend not to go above 1024*768, if I've got excess FPS to burn I'll put them into quality on everything else rather than losing quality and effects just for a higher resolution.

To me it just looks better.

I prefer high resolution to AA personally, it seems to have much less of a performance hit, I run most of my games @ 1600x1200 with 8xAF, no AA.

Looks fine and runs excellent! Minus Far cry, that was a 1280x1024 job..

My display is blurry at 1600 x 1200. There is little difference with AA enabled.

i have the system to handle it, but i dont play with aa because im more focused on actually playing the game than observing the aa

You mean you don´t play with aa because you aren´t disturbed by jaggies ;) That is the only reason not to use aa if your system can handle it. If you like pixelisation.

My LCD cannot go beyond 1024 x 768. My CRT cannot go beyond 1024 x 768 @ anything higher than 100 hz. Thus, I tend to just ignore AA and leave it at 1024 x 768 on either monitor. :p

but while you observe said pixelation youd have been fragged several times over :p

All my games run at 1280x960 or 1280x 1024. At this resolution, the jaggies pretty much become neglegent to me and AA isn't worth the reduced framerate which is much more important to me

Honestly, i've found the whole AA thing to be completely overhyped over these years. Im simply to busy playing and enjoying the game then worrying about how blocky the fucking edges of polygons are.

AA, I don't use it now, and I don't plan on using it in the future.

This has been a presentation of "In my honest opinion"

In my own personal tests (using HardOCP's UT2K3 benchmarking program) my games run better using 1024x768 w/ 4xAA as opposed to 1280x1024 w/ 2x AA. I don't really use AF that often, because I don't really notice it enough to warrant the performance loss. On the other hand, I do notice AA, and prefer it over higher resolutions.

I prefer 1280x1024 2xAA 8xAF over the other option.

I like high resolutions better then AA. I have never seemed to like AA much anyway.

1024x768 looks pretty to me, i use AA all the way up (9700pro) and the pixles are smoother than ever (meaning there are no jagz) the diferences by 1280 and 1024 isnt that big exept tends to make things smaller, such as your crosshair in 1st person shooters (depending on your screen size).

Who cares about being fragged or not. At least I doesn´t got jaggies ;) And it´s always fun being the underdog. Like IL 2 for example. Much more rewarding if you manage to down a better plane with a lesser plane.

I can't live without AA now that i've seen it. I guess it's a personal preference for everyone. I still see jaggies at even high resolutions. These pics are taken at 1280X960 res and I don't think it takes even more than a fraction of a second to notice the jaggies.

Damn, Chewy has really let himself go. Someone needs to call Mutt N' Cutts.

I personally prefer to use AA and AF. Usually 4x aa and 16x af at 1280x1024 or 1280x960.

'Chewbaka' = Chubaka. Literal translation: middle stupid.

George Lucas: It just sounded neat. So I used it.

:p

Back on topic, I play with AA on if I really notice jaggies. Otherwise, it's disabled in my drivers. ;)
